Should we be using the {copied} or {merged-from} tags to maintain attribution on the source material? -- Jake fuersturm (talk) 14:12, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

According to this the use of such tags is "optional but recommended". I probably won't use them just because it takes extra time, but I guess it would be good. --Cerebellum (talk) 14:54, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I guess as long as the Edit Summary line for each merge shows the source of the material coming in? -- Jake fuersturm (talk) 15:06, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting

[edit]

Is there a way to add an extra divider between each Character? The problem is that with ===X=== and ====X==== the fonts aren't very distinct. -- Jake fuersturm (talk) 14:15, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know of a way, but if there that would be great. --Cerebellum (talk) 14:54, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Since the section of the alphabet being covered is already in the title of the article, maybe we could do away with the headers for each letter, and have the character names be the section titles instead? Fortdj33 (talk) 16:21, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That could work, but then what happens to the nifty little alphabetically link box you guys put at the top of the article? -- Jake fuersturm (talk) 16:40, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately the compact TOC is not really functional anyway, since each article is only using a portion of the TOC, and it doesn't include the references, see also section, etc. If the character names are the section titles, then perhaps a {{TOC right}} would work better (e.g. List of Star Wars starfighters), or a {{TOC left}} to avoid conflict with the character infoboxes. Fortdj33 (talk) 16:58, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Check out an example of what I mean on the List of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero characters: D-G article. Fortdj33 (talk) 17:04, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, both before and after look good, and both have their own flaws. I guess we have to work within the existing limits of what Wikipedia can do. I like the idea of the TOC right, it just seems to look better, although you have a point about it interfering with the infoboxes. Is there a way to make the TOC hidden by default? -- Jake fuersturm (talk) 17:13, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is a {{TOChidden}} which defaults to being hidden, but I can't find any documentation that would allow us to place it on the left or right side of the page. And the purpose of a compact TOC in the first place, is to avoid any dead space at the top of the page. As you said, we have to work within the existing limits of what Wikipedia can do, and it doesn't look like we can have it both ways... Fortdj33 (talk) 17:28, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
After trying out the hidden TOC on the List of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero characters: S-Z article, I think that is the way to go. It gets the TOC out of the way, but still provides a list of characters in that article if necessary. And the primary goal should be consolidating the articles for minor G.I. Joe characters, so that articles linking to those characters have somewhere to go for information. Fortdj33 (talk) 20:22, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bloody hell, just figured out that you can draw a horizontal line by doing this:

Infoboxes for merged characters

[edit]

How does everyone feel about the inclusion or deletion of the infoboxes, for the character articles that have been merged into the alphabetical lists? Personally, I think that we should either include as much information from the filecards in the infobox as we can, or include that information in the beginning paragraph of each character's bio, but not both. Right now, the info is being used in both places, which to me is redundant. Where do you think it is better displayed? Fortdj33 (talk)

Personally, I love infoboxes, as they're a quick and easy summary of the character's essentials. My only concern is that it's going to be a killer for the formatting of the article, we already see that with some of the merged characters where the infobox is spreading into the next section. -- Jake Fuersturm (talk) 02:39, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My suggestion would be to only use the infoboxes for characters that have their own articles. The alphabetical lists are long enough, without adding the extra space from the infoboxes, and most of them don't contain any information that isn't already in the character's bio. Also, if we eliminate the infoboxes from the lists, and reserve them only for the character articles, we would then have the option of displaying the TOC on the left side of the list articles, instead of having it hidden. Fortdj33 (talk) 12:38, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I implemented this suggestion on the List of Cobra characters article as an example. Fortdj33 (talk) 17:01, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I also tried this on the List of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero characters: D-G, where I standardized the character bios as such:
X is the G.I. Joe Team's __________, and he was first released as an action figure in ____. His real name is _______________, and his rank is ________________. X was born in _______________.
X's primary military specialty is _______________, and his secondary military specialty is _______________. (Rest of bio from file card goes here, followed by paragraphs about Marvel Comics appearances, Devil's Due appearances, and cartoon appearances).
Let me know what you think, and I will plan on implementing this on the rest of the character lists soon. Fortdj33 (talk) 18:00, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Under construction

[edit]

I removed the {{under construction}} template, since all of the characters that need to be merged have been added, and the article has been cleaned up several times. I might add some more minor characters later, but I would appreciate any help in adding summary paragraphs to this list, for major characters who have their own articles. Thanks! Proposed merger

[edit]

Looking at the Crankcase (G.I. Joe) article, it looks like Bellomo is the only independent, reliable source. A WP:BEFORE search doesn't turn up anything additional. This looks like a pretty clear notability failure, but since there is a reliable source in the Crankcase article, it looks like a merger to the character list would be a decent WP:ATD. Hog Farm (talk) 19:43, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am not opposed to a merger but trying to see if there is more interested in being involved. See below -- Otr500 (talk) 15:47, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Article merged. Thanks for raising this discussion; quite frankly, it needs to happen to more characters. sixtynine • whaddya want? • 02:41, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Article issues

[edit]
There is pretty clear consensus at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero characters (A–C) that there are multiple issues needing attention with this article as well as:
This would include possible consolidation, trimming, and sourcing. Any help would be appreciated and those interested might add their name to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject G.I. Joe#Maintenance. -- Otr500 (talk) 15:56, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, none of the character articles are long enough to actually justify splitting them into 5 articles. We should merge them all into one article, which will make trimming and sourcing a lot easier, and would be better for readers. Any objections? Devonian Wombat (talk) 07:42, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
