Major reformat, January 2023

I've updated the List to follow the Fraternities and Sororities Project standard.

  • All fields are sortable.
  • Adjusted the grey highlight for inactive chapters, lightening it somewhat for better contrast.
  • Added charter year and range to all chapters, where this information is known. There are just a few unknown years.
  • Updated school names to shorten some of them where they have very long names, for readability, and adjusted the school name if it has changed. Where a university's name is excessively lengthened by addition of the city name, I've omitted that city name in the title, as it shows up in the immediate next column.
  • Added EFNs to note original local chapter names and years of origination, where known. Or, noted where a chapter came from a colony.
  • Adjusted the order of chapters to show order of chartering by year; in some cases the order hadn't been followed prior to updating this list. Where multiple chapters were formed in a single year, another editor may add actual dates of founding, and then adjust to match that order.
  • Chi Omega's apparent preference for long-dormant and subsequently reassigned chapter names is to name the original chapter something like "Epsilon (Old)"; I have adhered to this practice.
  • Inserted a few unassigned chapter names into the main rank of the table, in order that they would have appeared, where that name may be the only one left from an Α-to-Ω series to have been omitted. In some cases, future editors may offer an interesting reference note to explain why a chapter name went unused. Where an entire alphabetical series was largely unassigned, I placed these at the end of the table for stylistic reasons. Another editor may certainly add them to the alphabetical rank. It appears that Chi Omega names its chapters following the naming order established for its first 24 chapter series. This table now lists named chapters in that order, by year, though strict order by date is our standard (among Project editors).

Previously, a few of the chapters had names where the references didn't agree with each other. For example, there was a second incidence of Phi Delta, which is now Mississippi State's name, but Baird's also gave that name to an chapter at the University of Southern California. I assume therefore that Baird's was wrong, and that USC had been re-assigned the original Phi chapter's name. This table reflects the latter. Similarly, the second use of Epsilon, at SUNY Buffalo appears to have been incorrectly listed in the Baird's Archive as being Epsilon Delta, which is the proper name for the chapter at Southern Mississippi.

I had a few trailing questions that I've asked of the Baird's Archive archivist and of Chi Omega's archivist, in Jan 2023, which when answered I will update here.

Actual dates may be added, to improve the citations that show only the year. To ensure these correctly sort, use this template: {{dts|1895|04|05}} for April 5, 1895, thus replacing the simple year {{dts|1895}}.

For some reason I was unable to do a global edit to remove the monotonous references to each line, noting the information came from Baird's. Here, where virtually all citations of prior locals came from Baird's, our practice is to simply note this fact in the header paragraph of the list. If someone would wish to remove these individual refs, (these: <ref name="Baird's Manual Online" />) by all means do so. Jax MN (talk) 00:34, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

The only highlighting issue that stands out as different from the rest is Oglethorpe, where the previous chapter name was reassigned after its closure there. So the current Oglethorpe chapter had been granted a new name. As this school has an active chapter I left the line for that school in white (no fill), as opposed to highlighting the closed, first use of that chapter name. Oglethorpe is listed twice because of this naming situation. Jax MN (talk) 17:45, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

No information on my chapter at San Diego State university , that really sucks !!!

Why did you make us disappear 76.133.155.168 (talk) 04:51, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

I was the main editor to update this page. I do not understand the complaint, Anon. The Gamma Delta chapter is listed, noting it was formed at SDSU in 1950, and lasted until 1994. It is presently inactive. An adjacent reference note says it originated as the Shyo Club, a local, in 1921. Another chapter is in San Diego, Kappa Lambda chapter, which is at similarly-named UCSD. That chapter remains active. You can easily search the page for either California or for San Diego to find these. Jax MN (talk) 08:27, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
