inbound redirects
http://toolserver.org/~dispenser/cgi-bin/rdcheck.py?page=List_of_Cars_characters shows a mess of inbound redirects to this page, anchored to sections which do not exist. The suggestions it supplies seem mostly wrong or useless; in some cases, a character name redirects here even though there's nothing here about the character. 66.102.83.61 (talk) 21:04, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
Copypasta
I'm seeing a fair amount of blatantly-promotional text for the pointless cash-in sequel Cars 2 creeping into individual character descriptions. Typically these are POV text openly praising a character (like "Though charming and eloquent, it's his stealth maneuvering, intelligence and years in the field that enable him to thwart unexpected attacks from bad guys...") where a check on search engines leads back to disney.go.com/cars (which has a subpage per character) or other sites sourced directly from the Disney promo descriptions. This fails both neutrality and copyright as this is just Disney advertising a film to sell trademarked die-cast toy cars as profitable licensed characters. Wikipedia is not a venue to repost Disney advertisements verbatim. It is an encyclopaedia. All of this promotional language needs to be put through a web search, one or two lines at a time, and anything which is verbatim marketing hype like "Brent Mustangburger is an American sports broadcasting icon. ... widely considered one of the most recognizable voices in the history of automobile sports television and associated with some of the most memorable moments" needs to quite simply be removed, for legal reasons if nothing else. I've killed some of it but much remains. 66.102.83.61 (talk) 13:14, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
Regarding the car Finn McMissile is in Cars 2
On the Wiki page, whomever wrote it seems to believe Finn is based on multiple cars, whereas it seems VERY obvious to me it's based solely on the Aston Martin DB5. Why do I believe this? Well, all one needs to do is look at a picture of and Aston Martin DB5. http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/28/james-bond-aston-martin-db5-sells-for-4-6-million/ has a picture of it which shows several of the reasons I believe this. First, the logo on the front of the car matches that of Aston Martin, but that's just the first clue. What I believe to be the rear view mirrors are placed precisely where they were on the DB5. The Headlights are the same, the spoiler on the hood is the same, the side air intakes on the front quarter panel, the rear fins, the window shapes are all exactly the same as the James Bond Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger. The only thing which doesn't match perfectly is the front grill, but I believe that's because they wanted Finn to have a mustache, to give the character, well, character. No car in the movie looks exactly, in every way like ANY car, and that's not only because they're animated, but also because they're characters. The car Finn McMissile seems, to me, to match the Bond DB5 so precisely, I believe it should be stated as such in the Wikipedia entry, but I don't like usurping authority in what is quite obviously not a point of fact, but rather opinion. Every other car is based on ONE car, not on several, and Finn McMissile is no exception. He's British, so that counts out the Kharmann Ghia (as well as many other things, such as the window shape, front headlights, and rear view mirror placements to get started, not to mention the lack of the VW logo on the front). If I don't get any sound arguments as to why we shouldn't state straight out Finn McMissile is an Aston Martin DB5, I will make it so, as it seems this entire list, though providing GREAT information for those of us looking for precisely which car certain characters are based upon, is itself based upon nothing but opinion (which violates the Wikipedia guidelines IIRC). 173.169.227.190 (talk) 15:06, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, one can't say "every other car is based on ONE car, not on several" as there are too many counter-examples already listed (such as Motorama show car 'Flo' as a Buick-like vehicle with Chrysler-style tail fins; Lightning and Chick are supposedly also composites of multiple car designs - although this may be that no manufacturer wishes to be associated with a #86 vehicle that deliberately causes dangerous and damaging collisions). It's possible to say that (a cartoon car) resembles (real car or cars) with a link to a photo of each for comparison; if you can find an external source (for instance, Porsche was proudly boasting to the media that their car got to be 'Sally' and their rep, Studio Services, proposed her model name as her surname, so that's easily sourced) then cite that. 66.102.83.61 (talk) 13:14, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
- Interestingly, Pixar employees have never said Finn McMissile was based on the Aston Martin DB5 in any interview, usually answering evasively he is an in-house model resulting from the mix of several British and Italian cars. But looking at Finn from behind, there is so much resemblance it's very unlikely they didn't took at least a bit of inspiration from the DB5. I tend to suspect they don't speak of James Bond's car because of license and copyright issues. But Finn doesn't match a DB5 on every single aspect: the profile is a bit different, with different side vents, and a rear hip incorporating a small tailfin. But all this is only my own opinion... --Gray Catbird (talk) 21:03, 13 July 2012 (UTC)
- I'm not surprised they conveniently don't speak of James Bond's car directly. They don't mention Doc Hollywood as an inspiration for the original film, they don't acknowledge Bob Waldmire even though Fillmore (Cars) is so heavily based on that artist that Pixar tried (and failed) to buy the "Waldmire" name from Bob for use on the branded toy cars. They need to claim to own the ideas behind the brandable characters so that they own the revenue from the die-cast toys. The franchise has brought in billions of dollars, much of it in toy sales. To say outright "that's James Bond's car" creates a huge problem as the Bond character is the property of a rival studio. As such, they change the car ever so slightly and claim to be its inventor for trademark reasons... much as 4 Women on the Route has to call their boom truck not Mater (Cars) but "Tater". I'd expect to see some differences - the cars are on a cartoonishly-short wheelbase, they're slightly taller so that the windscreen is nearer to vertical (to accommodate the character's eyes without tilting them far back) and the nose is often missing the grill, the chrome or even the headlamps to give a blank canvas on which to draw the character's lips. Lynda "Mrs. The King's" Chrysler Town & Country has a blue face in the cartoon and a chrome face (chrome grill, four headlamps, chrome bumper) on the original 1970's Chrysler street car, for instance. 66.102.83.61 (talk) 13:38, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

intro
The following text was blanked from this article's introduction:
- There are no people or animals in Cars or its sequel and franchise; people are portrayed as anthropomorphic motorcars or other vehicles, cattle as farm tractors and insects as VW Bugs. As cars contain thousands of pounds of metal, they are stiff, heavy and inflexible, characteristics respected in the "truth to materials" animation of the characters. This requires they gesture using their front tyres as hands and that facial expressions be depicted using the hood as the nose of the character, with the mouth on the front bumper and the eyes and eyelids on the windshield. Pixar's John Lasseter cites classic Disney animation Susie the Little Blue Coupe as inspiration for the basic character design; eyes-in-windscreen animation was also used by Disney for animated motorcar Herbie, The Love Bug.
- Many of the car-acters are based on real people in NASCAR or motorsport (Richard and Lynda Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Mario Andretti, Michael Schumacher), individual longtime U.S. Route 66 merchants ("Flo" as Fran Houser of the Midpoint Café, "Sally" as Dawn Welch of the Rock Café) or well-known public figures (such as talk-show host Jay Leno or former California governor Arnold Schwartzenegger). A few notables appear only in cameo roles.
Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Stand-alone lists#Lead and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lists#Lead section or paragraph seem clear enough. "Stand-alone lists should begin with a lead section that summarizes its content, provides any necessary background information, gives encyclopedic context, links to other relevant articles, and makes direct statements about the criteria by which members of the list were selected, unless inclusion criteria are unambiguously clear from the article title."
As such, the current status quo of this ridiculously-long page providing basically no lead or intro does not represent acceptable style for what is actually an article in all but name. If the article is too long, split it - either by moving the list of franchise characters (Cars Toons, Cars 2) onto a second page or by undoing edits which merged formerly independent individual-character articles onto this page. Changing the intro alone does nothing to solve the length or plot-summary issues on the rest of this page and will not suffice to bring the article below the hundred-kilobyte level. 66.102.83.61 (talk) 16:48, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- Just because an article is in a poor state is no excuse to make it worse. In fact, based on your own observations, viz "Stand-alone lists should begin with a lead section that summarizes its content, provides any necessary background information, gives encyclopedic context, links to other relevant articles, and makes direct statements about the criteria by which members of the list were selected, unless inclusion criteria are unambiguously clear from the article title." I've changed my mind regarding the need for an intro, and think the current single sentence is adequate. Perhaps a few more words to say that many characters were based on real people, but not really much more. Chaheel Riens (talk) 18:22, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Lizzie
There seems to be some conflict about which model year of Model T she was based on. The styling is from the 3rd generation which were produced from 1917–23 so 1923 is plausible but I could not find a good reliable source for that. The only sort of official source was this one which seems to only refer to the start of production in 1913 and not the actual year the animators model her after. Maybe someone more familiar with the article could skim through the 55 sources cited already and find a reference for this. Nyth63 12:23, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
Since when is Lightning Mcqueen a Ford Scorpio?
Does anyone know why it says that Mcqueen is modeled after a Ford Scorpio? Mcqueen is a Chevrolet Corvette. I'm sure that's quite obvious by now, but getting back to my point, a quick Google search could show anyone that he looks absolutely nothing like a Ford Scorpio so I'd like to know who put that there. Yes, I've already changed it to "Chevrolet Corvette" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Luigi Gaskell (talk • contribs) 02:32, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

Race contestants
I'll keep this simple ... please stop adding this. It is uncited, it is not backed up by the film series (the subject of the article) and it is not notable, as none of them are major characters in the film. If you believe it's otherwise, present your reasoning here. --McDoobAU93 02:00, 26 August 2017 (UTC)

Shouldn't Cruz Ramirez be under the subheading Dinoco Team, as at the end of the movie she became the Dinoco racer? Daisy134 (talk) 13:29, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
Axlerod
Why do they call Sir Miles Axlerod "Sir Axlerod"? Sirs are called by their first names-- so Sir Miles-- and this movie was big in the UK and Commonwealth where everyone knows that. Seems like a silly mistake.Venqax (talk) 21:32, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

There should be content for the other World Grand Prix Racers, the names and content for the original Piston Cup Racers from Cars, and the sections for the Cars 3 characters are incomplete(e.g. The section for "Sweet Tea"). However, people kept on removing the content and vandalising the page. Cosecant57 (talk) 15:11, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

I have a question about an edit I made a to the World Grand Prix racers on the list of Cars page. Not to sound selfish, but someone reverted my edits. If there was a mistake, I wasn't trying to do any vandalism. The information that I added weren't fan-made, but actually true. I was only providing extra information.
Original: Carla Veloso is a Brazilian Peugeot Type 908 Le Mans Endurance race car. Her pit team includes her crew chief, Cruz Besouro. She is voiced by Claudia Leitte in the Brazilian version of the film and Jossara Jinaro for other roles. Her racing number is 8.
What I want to change: Carla Veloso is a Brazilian Le Mans Endurance race car. According to Meet the Cars, she is 2009 Le Motor Prototype B12, which her model is a mix of a Lola-Drayson B12/69 EV and a Lola-Aston Martin B09/60 Her pit team includes her crew chief, Cruz Besouro. She is voiced by Claudia Leitte in the Brazilian version of the film and Jossara Jinaro for other roles. Her racing number is 8.
Not to sound mean, but the person who said she was a Peugeot Type 908 Le Mans Endurance race car, probably didn't know this information. In fact a lot of people have to remember that in Disney/Pixar's Cars, some characters may be a mix of different vehicles. If the person doesn't believe this, please tell them to consider my evidence. And if they still refuse, I will leave the page alone.
- Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. Please provide a proper citation (see WP:CITE) for this information to be included [a web link can do, I can work from that] - vague references to some or some other episode is not helpful.
