Club statistics

I think that the club statistics should includ the goals and Apps in Barcelona B and C as in the case of Pedro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedro_Rodr%C3%ADguez_Ledesma ). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dionisio Siracusa (talkcontribs) 20:58, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Did not understand the difference between score and result

Under sections 5.3.1, 5.3.2, and 5.3.3, the table has two columns 'Score' and 'Result'. Can anyone please explain it to me what they are. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Junior Dos Santos Almeida (talkcontribs) 18:15, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Style of play?

Does anyone feel qualified to write a paragraph or two on how Leo Messi plays? Vranak (talk) 19:52, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

A "style of play" section is missing in this article. The section should be like the "style of play" section of the Cristiano Ronaldo or Neymar pages. I have some reference someone can use to make a "style of play" section Messi.

This sentence has to be rewritten

Messi made UEFA Champions League history by becoming the first player to score five goals in one match, in a 7–1 win against Bayer Leverkusen.[9] With two goals in the next round against Milan, he matched José Altafini's record of 14 goals in a single Champions League season

Now this makes no sense at all. Excactly what are we talking about here? The Champions League or the European Cup? If we talk about the European cup then please remove the statement that messi is the first to score 5 goals since this is false. If we are talking about the Champions League, please remove the statement about José Altafini since he never played in the Champions League.

If Messi is the only one to score 5 goals in the Champions League then he is also the only one to score 14 goals in the same competition. If we include José Altafini in this sentence then also Ove Olsson, Bent Løfqvist, José Altafini, Ray Crawford, Nikola Kotkov, Flórián Albert, Paul van Himst, Gerd Müller, Claudio Sulser and Søren Lerby have to be included as player that have scored 5 goals in the Champions League. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.54.207.10 (talk) 11:39, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

Style of play section

The article is currently a GA, but the "style of play" section, which is full of praise and verbosity, is not of GA caliber. I have trimmed the section somewhat, but it needs another pair of eyes, in my opinion. Drmies (talk) 20:58, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Minor Salary Correction

A minor change should be made under Messi's salary description. Below, please refer to the line of text that states his salary "E 29.9 million" with 33 million in parenthesis. There should be a dollar sign before the 33 million, not a Euro sign.

In March 2010, France Football ranked him at the top of its list of the world's richest footballers, ahead of David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, with £29.6 million (€33 million) in combined income from salaries, bonuses and off-field earnings.[204][205] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pablocastror (talkcontribs) 19:21, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Goals per Game Ratio (25 August 2012)

The Goals per Game ratio must be added to the "Club" chart in the section Career statistics. This must be made only in the final column titled as "Total", in order to make it more summarized. The last "Total" column will contain four sub-columns, being these: Apps - Goals - Assists - GPG (Goals per Game).

By adding the above, it will be easier to compare the goals scored by Lionel Messi with the goals scored by another player (e.g. Cristiano Ronaldo). It's way easier to compare the amount of goals scored in a given number of matches than the amount of goals scored overall. The GPG ratio will make it better.

Currently, the GPG's for each season are:

2004-05: 0,11
2005-06: 0,33
2006-07: 0,47
2007-08: 0,40
2008-09: 0,74
2009-10: 0,88
2010-11: 0,96
2011-12: 1,21
2012-13: 1,50

As we can see, the GPG's allow us to analyze better the evolution of the player throughout his career. — Preceding signed comment added by AndresSuescun (talkcontribs) 01:57, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

This feels an awful lot like WP:SYNTH and WP:POV. --Mosmof (talk) 06:19, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
This is not a WP:SYNTH issue. Is not about reaching a third conclusion (synthesis), is about giving an additional presentation of the original data (the goals scored), in order to point the relevance of the number of matches played in the final goal tally. Is like abridge the "Apps" and "Goals" data in a new item called "GPG", is to translate the same data in "other words".
Besides, it'd make certain situations more understandable. For example, an "X" player suffers an injury at the beginning of the season and only manages to score three goals in four matches. As a result, the low amount of goals yields a very low tally, while the GPG ratio is 0,75 (a very high one when it comes to soccer). This GPG ratio shows the good performance "X" had in the few matches he/she played. It would be SUPPORTED BY VERIFIED DATA (numbers), not by subjective words (fan poetry).
Regarding to the WP:POV, I would like to apologize if my true intentions with this proposal might have seemed biased. Is normal to think so when I stated: "it will be easier to compare the goals scored by Lionel Messi with the goals scored by another player (e.g. Cristiano Ronaldo)". Actually, I was trying to get in a regular reader's point of view. I insist, this is not a subjective approach, is just a proposal to make the information easier to understand. The GPG ratio appears in the "Career totals" chart, I don't see why adding it at the "Club" chart wouldn't make the things better. --AndresSuescun (talk) 02:38, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
I don't think such info is necessary. People can work out goals per game just by looking at numbers of games and goals, they don't need us to spell it out for them. – PeeJay 12:40, 26 August 2012 (UTC)ç
I'm not talking about replace any column, we'd be adding a new one. Is just one column that would make the things better. Is not a matter of praising a player, is about improve the information that Wikipedia is providing the users. Is a column with PROVEN DATA, why are you making such a big deal about it? Sorry if my grammar mistakes bother you, english is not my first language. -AndresSuescun (talk) 12:32, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
This seems like a slightly excessive level of detail that we generally want to avoid in Wikipedia. GPG isn't a widely cited statistic and until major media outlet starts using it as a common metric, we're placing undue emphasis on it by including it in the stat box. There's no indication that the "regular user" is actually looking for this statistic, and anyone who cares should be good enough at basic arithmetic to draw their own conclusion. Mosmof (talk) 03:03, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
Well, now I think is pointless to keep arguing. I did my best, I just wanted to use this statistic in every player to get the Wikipedia unified. I took Lionel Messi because his relevance. It´s in lots of articles and I've always found it pretty useful since makes easier to compare the scores between one season an another, or one player and another. These are some high profile Wikipedia articles that makes use of the GPG (or Goals per Match):
- European Cup and UEFA Champions League records and statistics
- Pichichi Trophy
- Association football players with 50 or more international goals
- International association football goal scorers by country - AndresSuescun (talk) 01:39, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

a seperate page for statistics

Some lists in the Career Statistics made the article too long. I suggest creating a seperate page for detailed career statistics. Only important data remain in the main page. Just like those seperate statistics page for tennis players, such as Roger Federer career statistics. Ftj1357 (talk) 04:35, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

hey sorry to read this after ending it...im kind of new to write at wikipedia...anyway...i think if we put it with hide options would make better than two separated pages ? what do u think ??

I put all references also so no one can say its not a fact !

also i added goals in world cup club ...

the only problem is the tennis statistics is really much longer and richer than soccer player..so with the hide option it can still make the article short as it was and anyone who is interested would check it if not he doesnt need to expand it !!

important updates at Messi's page

there is important discussion about messi's page at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Football#Lionel_Messi

the discussion about :

1-adding back the assists which have been removed ( and i think its really important ) especially most notable players have it and even less known player than messi have this statistics which is important for any striker .(remember the debate about messi vs ronalod have lots about messi makes more assists than ronaldo ).

--Q by ‎87.59.118.124 : Why where the statistics removed? because if you are interested in that should have tell that at the discussion .

What does this even mean? Please return them. They in no way make the page longer or harder to read and add a valuable piece of information to this biography.

2-adding back the youth and under -23 goals because they are different statistics from senior one and u cant merge them together . since fifa themself separate them differently .

3-about the table of messi goals and if its important info or just long statistics(useless one).

Thank you all . adnantalk 12 pm 16 october 2012 (UTC)

Please add your comments to the discussion in FOOTY. -- Alexf(talk) 16:24, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Why did you take all the stats out of Messi's page?? There was good data about him... I was really happy for like a day when I saw that you were adding the stats that had "goals to every spanish, european and non european teams" detailed. Now you erased more than there was before... I would love to have it back, but I have no idea how to... Put them back, please!! 190.19.39.225 (talk) 09:39, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

About 1 month ago, there used to be a lot of Messi's statistics, such as his hat tricks, assists, the amount of goals he has scored to each european team, etc. Anyway, I know an user suggested to remove them because the article was too long, but I personally think it looked better with all the statistics because you could know everything about him.
