[edit]There seems to be some difference of opinion as to whether Hunter was born in 1877 or 1879 (Googling reveals both years used). Also whether he died in Glasgow or London. --Stormie 12:30, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
- The majority of sources I have found suggest that he died in Glasgow, but I have seen some say London, and it is true that at the time he was spending most of his time in either London or Fife so, in that context, Glasgow seems a little unlikely. The problem is that a lot of sources are art gallery biographies and many of them seem to borrow off each other, so it would be easy for one person to get it wrong and then spread it. I am going to look for some more reliable sources.--KorruskiTalk 09:52, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

An interesting article on an artist I knew nothing about before reading this. No broken external links, and I have fixed the two dablinks during a light copy-edit. Images are fine. Article is stable; focus is sufficiently broad. Attending to the issues below will I think ensure compliance with the rest of the GA criteria.
Issues:
- References ought to have accessdates (some do, but not all), and where given the date shown for the information on the website (so for example [1] should have a "date=2011" in the template)
- The last three sentences of "Early life" are followed by this ref, but that doesn't mention a trip to Paris. Please check sources for these sentences.
- "Glasgow" ends with uncited sentences, particularly "All were influenced, to varying degrees, by the purity, bright colour and brushwork technique of the French Impressionists, Post-Impressionists and Fauvists."
- "first one-man exhibition with Arthur Reid" - should that be Alexander Reid?
- This ref points out that the term "Scottish Colourists" wasn't used during Hunter's lifetime, which seems worth mentioning.
- "European travel" - "When Hunter returned from his first series of trips abroad, in 1922, he settled in Fife, on the east coast of Scotland. His scenes of Fife, particularly those inspired by the house-boats at Loch Lomond, are amongst his best-known and most recognisable works." Needs citations.
- Ill-health: I can't see stomach pains mentioned in this ref, which is the next reference given.
- The infobox mentions place of death, so the text should too.
- Popularity: "Hunter's paintings were popular during his lifetime, and his exhibitions in Glasgow, London and New York attracted large numbers of visitors." needs a source
- Same with "Many years after his death, solo exhibitions of Hunter's paintings were still held and, in 1953, the display of a selection of watercolours and paintings in Glasgow attracted numerous visitors and widespread critical commentary." Quoting one critic isn't enough to show "widespread critical commentary".
- The Nick Curnow quotation can be trimmed right down, because unless you tell the story of the particular painting's history (which would be irrelevant here, I think) you don't need to know that the painting was special because of its links with the world of auctioneering, and it in fact makes no sense to be told this.
- In fact, saying that the paintings fetch "high prices" strikes me as needing a source lest it seem like original research: I have no idea whether £78,000 for example is high or low for a painting of this style / age etc.
On hold for seven days or so to allow these issues to be addressed. BencherliteTalk 22:15, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- Very many thanks for taking the time to review. My responses to your comments as follows:
- References - all references now have an accessdate. Few of my sources had publication dates specified, but I am sure that all those that do have a date have it included in the source. Where did you get 2011 for source 1 from? I can't see a date anywhere and, indeed, 2011 is unlikely as I accessed the source in december 2010. Some have a copyright year, but that will have been updated in January for the whole site, and won't necessarily reflect the actual date the page was published.
- Trip to Paris - Good point. The Portland gallery ref has this info, so I have added that in for the sentence about Paris.
- I think this sentence pre-dates my major rewrite, and I cannot find a source. I have replaced it with some different information, including the interesting point that you mention about the fact that the term Scottish Colourists wasn't used until after the deaths of three of them.
- Arthur Reid - Yes... how odd that I got that wrong! Changed, and also in the infobox.
- European travel - This bit also predates my work on the article, I think. I cannot find a source, so have edited it slightly to restrict it to statements I do have references for, and have cited it.
- Stomach pains - are mentioned in another source, I have put a cite in the correct place for this.
- I have put place of death here, and a cite for it.
- Popularity - The Portland Gallery reference says that Hunter found favour with critics, and that he had successful exhibitions. I have used this as the reference, and have edit the copy to reflect what I can actually cite.
- Critical commentary - I have edited the copy here, so it doesn't make the claim I can't support
- Nick Curnow - Agreed. Wonder if it's even worth having it at all. It seemed like such a good quote when I found it, but now I'm less sure. For now, I have heavily trimmed it.
- High prices - Hmm, good point. Still, I think that £78,000 or £144,000 is objective a large sum of money. To that end, I have edited the copy slightly so that it seems less like original research. Is that better?
- Thanks again for your time. --KorruskiTalk 23:21, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- That's all fine. I tend to put copyright dates in, because not all sites will update each page at the turn of a year, but it's not the end of the world not to include it. Good work. I'm happy that the remainder of the GA criteria are met, so it's a pass. Well done! BencherliteTalk 23:28, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
