Deletion of film/TV roles
[edit]After restoring two of Miss Dern's film/TV roles to the filmography/tv tables (after they were deleted/restored then deleted again by one editor from the tables), they have been deleted with the edit summary that "I Had To Delete Them Over A Lack Of Ratings". I haven't seen this criteria mentioned for any of Miss Dern's other roles. Shearonink (talk) 18:26, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
- Since I posted the above the text in question has been reverted five more times by a particular editor (with other editors editors restoring the content). Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 00:09, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
- And the user still has not provided what I consider a coherent statement on why they should be removed - closest to date has been "Those Films Have To Stay Off The List Because Of A Lack Of Ratings & A Violation Of Governmental Authority." I've reported him to WP:AN3 as a result of his actions, only because I'm one of the reverters otherwise I'd've been acted myself... Tabercil (talk) 00:21, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
I hope these edits have been reversed. One cannot selectively rewrite their own history. Genetikbliss (talk) 17:44, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
Date of Birth
[edit]I see that a user has changed her birth year to 1969 based off of This interview in Variety in which Dern says that IMDb has her age wrong and she is actually two years younger. This is an issue we ran into back when this article came out and we already discussed the claims. First, her being born in 1969 is more or less mathematically impossible due to events in both her career and personal life, such as when she emancipated herself from her parents at 13 and dated Kyle MacLachlan around the time that Blue Velvet was released. Second, we can't find any source anywhere that gives her birth date at 1969, and third, birth records in California are publicly accessible and those records show she was born in 1967: another website has obtained a copy of her birth certificate. The only thing putting this birth date in question is a remark in a 2014 interview when Dern says, "Yeah, I'm two years younger." She hasn't repeated the claim (that I know of) and has provided nothing to back it up. Public figures lie and say misleading things about themselves all the time, and thus in our goal to be as factually accurate as possible we don't automatically take what a celebrity says about themselves as fact if it conflicts with other reliable sources and evidence to the contrary; can you imagine what kind of a clusterfuck Donald Trump's article would be if we didn't follow this rule? So as of right now I don't see enough reason for us to change her age since that interview is the only thing conflicting with her recorded February 10, 1967 birth date. Reattacollector (talk) 01:08, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
- I also want to add, this issue has also be discussed at IMDb when this interview came out as well. They came to the same conclusion I did. Reattacollector (talk) 01:16, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
- A bunch of randoms in an IMDB forum don't count as reliables sources. Neither does IMDB. We have word from Dern herself that her age was misrepresented, so I tend to believe the subject that is in question over some randoms on an IMDB forum anyday. Rusted AutoParts 16:20, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
- Variety does count a reliable source for Wikipedia. IMDB is reliable only for one thing: it's filmography section. You may be right in terms of 1967 being her correct birth year, but where's your reliable source for that?? Tabercil (talk) 21:34, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
- And I think I just answered my own question after some Googling. A 2007 Washington Post article found here. ""The Wild Angels" plopped Peter Fonda onto a Harley-Davidson as Heavenly Blues, nihilist president of the San Pedro chapter of Hells Angels, boyfriend to biker mama Mike (Nancy Sinatra) and best pal of doomed outlaw the Loser (Bruce Dern)... Dern's real-life wife, Diane Ladd, playing the Loser's wife, became pregnant with daughter-actress Laura Dern during shooting." The Wild Angels was released in 1966. Tabercil (talk) 21:41, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
- Further digging... The Toledo Blade in 1992 ("In 1967 I did a movie with Peter Fonda called The Trip... I had just had my daughter Laura") and the Herald Journal in 1996 ("The couple separated two months after the 1967 birth of their daughter Laura")
- Huh. I wonder why she would lie about her age like that. Rusted AutoParts 22:03, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
- Age in Hollywood?? When you have people like Maggie Gyllenhaal saying "I’m 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55." and Melanie Griffith saying "By the time you're 40 in Los Angeles, you're over the hill in the business". Or for a funny take on it, this. Small wonder Laura sought to trim her age by a bit. Tabercil (talk) 22:18, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

The whole basic idea I was trying to convey is that her birth date has been established as February 10, 1967 for more than 30 years and I don't see a compelling reason to overturn it just based off of an interview where Dern states she is two years younger than her IMDb biography states - a claim that nobody seems to have taken seriously given that I have yet to see any other website amend her date of birth to February 10, 1969 in the year and a half since that interview was published. I imagine the reason for that is that the state of California's birth records are open to the public and anyone can obtain a non-valid, informational copy of Dern's birth certificate by sending a request and paying a fee. I guess if we wanted to lay this issue to rest permanently and prevent it from ever cropping up again one of us could obtain a copy of her birth certificate, scan it and post it to the Wikimedia Commons, if we can legally do that. Other websites already have. Reattacollector (talk) 17:23, 13 March 2016 (UTC)
And now in a interview with Haute Living, Dern acknowledges that she's a month from turning 50, effectively repudiating her claim in Variety two years ago. Reattacollector (talk) 18:37, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

COI
[edit]This page is clearly written and managed by publicists. It heavily downplays her relationship with Billy Bob Thornton, who married Angeline Jolie while still engaged to Dern. Dern was quite public and vocal about it at the time.
Also worth noting, and can be found referenced on her parents pages, is that she had a sister who drowned in a swimming pool as a baby. Genetikbliss (talk) 17:42, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
No "Ellen" or Blacklisting section?
[edit]How does an article about an actress who was blacklisted for a year and a half after her historic appearance in Ellen's coming out episode fail to mention this at all?--Cinemaniac86Dane_Cook_Hater_Extraordinaire 16:58, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
