1991
[edit]The 1991 results should be checked. TWIC 436 says that 2003 was Sveshnikov's first Latvian championship, but we have him winning in 1991. Also latchess.lv says in 2005 that Edvins Kengis had won every Latvian championship since 1984, but that's not what we have. Quale 03:25, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
- I have changed the 1991 result, see [1] and [2]. I am quite confident that it was Normunds Miezis who won the 1991 championship. The fact that Sveshnikov won in 1991 is mentioned here [3], but that is a geocities site and I think latchess.lv is more reliable.
- On the fact that Edvins Kengis has won 1984-2005, I think this is due to a poor translation: "has won in all Latvia championships since 1984 which is a very great achievement" (does it mean he won at least 1 game in every championship?). On [4] it says: Edvīns Ķeņģis, Latvijas čempions: seškārtējais, pēdējoreiz - 2004. gadā. (=this means sixfold champion, which was true in 2004 according to our list)
- I have checked a couple of the 1991-2005 results with my chess databases and can't find any other mistakes.
- Btw a very good dictionary latvian->english [5] It even has the word for "ninefold" in it! (since Janis Klovans won it 9 times)Voorlandt 09:59, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your careful work. I think we can make Wikipedia the best resource for championship winners. Books and websites have a lot of mistakes; see Talk:Australian Chess Championship for more cases we had to work to unravel. Quale 14:16, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
