lost in translation
[edit]I just compared the English and German versions of "Chapter 1", and there are major differences which actually alter quite considerably what the author wants to say. Perhaps this should be added to the article as a hint. 81.14.208.18 (talk) 14:54, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
incommensurable hate
[edit]To me this phrase makes no sense---to be "incommensurable," you need two things being measured. Would perhaps a better translation be "incalculable?" Or am I missing an important concept here? --Woland 17:06, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
Translation of "Verschärfte Vernehmung"
[edit]"Increased hearing" to me seems like a fairly bad translation of "Verschärfte Vernehmung". In this context, I would prefer "questioning" or "interrogation" for the noun, and "increased" doesn't convey the same message as the German word either - "intensified" sounds about right. If someone more fluent in German disagrees, go ahead and revert. --Osquar F (talk) 06:35, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
- The problem with "Verschärfte Vernehmung" isn't so much the translation as it is a question of whether or not this was actually a topic in Klemperer's book. If it is, I'd like someone to post the edition and page number. If not, we need to delete it. After all, this isn't an article about German phrases or euphemisms. It's an article about the book.
- The term came into prominence when Andrew Sullivan tried connecting it to the CIA's enhanced interrogation techniques during the Bush administration. Sullivan went the full Godwin and called it a Gestapo euphemism for torture. He never said Klemperer called it that, but I think his acolytes wanted to take it several steps further.
- Actually, I've since found that the German press is currently translating "enhanced interrogation techniques" as "Verschärfte Verhörmethoden." Close but no cigar.

- I think this is still current. The translation to "Enhanced Interrogation" seems to be politically motivated with regard to the Bush administration. I'd like to change it to a more more direct translation of "Intensified Interrogation", which is also given in the cited article. Anyone opposed?

Konzertlager
[edit]Concert camp? perhaps something along the lines of "concerted labour camps" was meant. 46.186.37.98 (talk) 02:41, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
- No, Konzertlager (lit. concert camp) was a deliberately offensive ("sick joke") euphemism for Konzentrationslager (concentration camp) in NS jargon. That is the reason for its inclusion in the article. -- Picapica (talk) 20:53, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
balancierstange
[edit]"started to use his diary as a personal exit to his frustrating and miserable life." thats just outright false. he didnt "start" writing notebook[s] (tagebuch), he has allways been doing so. and to tie it to allegedly being frustrated gives the whole work a spin of being revenge... that is NOT what this book was about. shame on whoever wrote that sentence!... Klemperer talks, in his Vorwort (foreword) about how he used his philology, his work as a scientist researching language (what he was a professor for) as an orientation, as a "balancierstange" (balancing pole) to not allow himself (!) to fall apart under this regime, to keep up his spirits. he worked (-without still being allowed to practice his scholarship-) in his old fashion, now focussing on the language of the propagandamachine, and its influence on everyday speech. That guy is a hero, in keeping his head up; and by doing that he wrote the only book that I personally regard as worthy as being recommended on the subject of "Drittes Reich". - I am german, btw. I dont know the translated version. like others pointed out, it may be full of errors; but I highly doubt that some translator suddenly brought some bitterness ("frustration") into it, that Klemperer did not; he just did not allow himself any frustration. if he had to, he was making bitter jokes, to clean himself of depressing thoughts! - he is a very impressing in doing so, and I have the bad feeling, whoever put that sentence in here, was outright lieing - or not reading the book... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.24.248.254 (talk) 15:59, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
- I looked at it and already found it a bit too much, and your comment confirmed that. I went in and changed accordingly. Drmies (talk) 02:40, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

TToTS – The Title of This Section
[edit]Is LTI really part of the book's title? If so, should we read the inclusion of the redundant initialism as a little comment on the subject matter? —Tamfang (talk) 23:32, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
- My (English) edition reads: "Translated from LTI Notizbuch eines Philologen, 3rd edition". So yes, i guess it is and should be. Is the initialism redundant in the first place? Doubtful. I fear not even native speakers of Latin would be able to decypher the meaning without any prompt.

Orwellian ambiguity?

what about author's suggestions?
[edit]Should not 'aufziehen', 'Organisation' and 'Gefolgschaft' be included amongst the words discussed?
