I enjoyed this brief article very much. I'd always thought of embroidery as mere embellishment and had not given any thought to its utility until a few years ago when I tried cross-stitch for the first time and was surprised at how the result transformed a piece of starched aida and handfuls of lengths of cotton floss into a material with almost the toughness and durability of leather.
