Requested move 22 July 2017
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: Moved to Keiffer Mitchell Jr. – there is consensus to remove the middle initial; there is no consensus to remove the Jr. Keiffer Mitchell is still a WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT here. No such user (talk) 08:58, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
Keiffer J. Mitchell Jr. → Keiffer Mitchell – * WP:PRIMARYTOPIC: He is the most notable person named Keiffer Mitchell due to being a state legislator; his father also named Keiffer was less well known, so an article about his father would be more appropriately called "Keiffer Mitchell Sr."
- WP:CRITERIA for naturalness: Most people are not going to search for the "J." initial, especially when media refers to him as just "Keiffer Mitchell", like this 2015 Baltimore Sun article, "Hogan names Democrat Keiffer Mitchell as special adviser." A google search of "Keiffer mitchell" site:baltimoresun.com returned ~450 results, vs. "Keiffer j. mitchell" site:baltimoresun.com at ~300. Arbor to SJ (talk) 07:19, 22 July 2017 (UTC) --Relisting. - Support. For some reason, old Wikipedia conventions that I never fully understood demanded articles about all but the most household-name American politicians to include their middle initial in the title whenever it could be located at all, regardless of whether it was actually used in most normal coverage of the person or not. But that's not consistent with WP:COMMONNAME — if the coverage of him is normally at "Keiffer Mitchell", then the article title should be at either "Keiffer Mitchell" or "Keiffer Mitchell (politician)" with no "J." and no "Jr.". And as for whether he needs the disambiguator or not, his dad is the less notable of the two, so if his dad ever actually gets a Wikipedia article it should be the disambiguated one, because the son is still the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Bearcat (talk) 16:26, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose – It's already primarytopic; there's no search issue. Apparently he designates himself with the Jr., as the photo shows, so what would be the rationale to move to the less precise title without Jr.? I would not oppose a move to just drop the middle initial, as that would not introduce any ambiguity. And Keiffer Mitchell Jr. is available, so that could have been done without this RM discussion.
