Is this just PSC for approval?

[edit]

It sounds like this is just PSC for approval ballots (where you only have two ranks, either approved or unapproved). Is this basically correct? Closed Limelike Curves (talk) 00:40, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lime,
The two are inherently related, with the original JR axioms being heavily inspired by PSC. Indeed, the generalization of PSC to weak rankings by Aziz and Lee listed in the PSC article is equivalent to PJR, when restricted to approval preferences. However, for something like EJR there is no known equivalent in the ranking world so far, so I would not say the the justified representation axioms are "just PSC". (Hope this kind of make sense :D) Jannikp97 (talk) 20:18, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good explanation, thanks! :)
So, does "Justified Representation" mean just the PSC-like axiom, or is it a broader name for all these axioms taken together? @Erel Segal
I'm wondering how this material should be organized across pages, e.g. whether we should group all this information under a page called something like "Proportional representation axioms", or whether we should have one page for PSC+"Justified representation", then another for EJR, etc. Closed Limelike Curves (talk) 17:18, 16 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's a bit difficult. I would personally say that all these JR, PJR, EJR axioms present in this article are in the "Justified Representation" type of axioms (as like a class of proportionality axioms for approval voting). However, something like priceability (introduced in the paper which introduced the Method of Equal Shares) has a different flavour than those "JR like" axioms.
I think creating a separate article on "Proportional representation axioms" could be sensible. Jannikp97 (talk) 13:28, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
