Changes Made

[edit]

Intro - Changed learnt to learned for consistency. Expanded a sentence to add weight.

Biography - Among other changes, added info on blind simuls and context of drinking-good-for-you claim, both citing Schoenberg. Moved doubts about alleged use of Shilling gambit to a footnote.

Comments welcome.

1876 match w Steinitz

[edit]

I've commented out "and it was considered at the time to be an unofficial world championship match" because there's no citation and it looks dubious. The only source I can find for 1876 is a French journal quoted at Winter, E. "Early Uses of 'World Chess Champion'". I would translate "Aujourd’hui que ce charmant Morphy a abandonné les échecs, il faut considérer M. Steinitz comme le roi de l’Echiquier moderne, et nous nous inclinons, tout éblouis, devant son éclatant triomphe" as "Since the charming Morphy has abandoned chess, one must regard Steinitz as the king of modern chess, and we bow down, totally dazzled, before his resounding triumph." Drinking

[edit]

I personally enjoyed whatever used to be in the article about Blackburne's legendary alcohol consumption. I don't know enough about Wikipedia practice to say if it's better to not have it in there, as it is now, or not, so I'm just making this comment on the talk page for consideration perhaps by those who do. I don't even know how to find what used to be in there. MikeDoyle (talk) 10:35, 16 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I now know how to view all previous versions of an article, which is great. I'm certainly not going to restore anything just because I personally enjoyed reading it; someone no doubt removed it for cause. If I ever get the time, I may look into the accuracy or lack there of of that material, but I know enough not to change anything unless it's verifiable, I'm sure, have proper documentation, sources etc. and this is not at all high on my list of priorities. I most definitely don't want to contribute to the propagation of false information. It was simply fancifully interesting and entertaining is all. MikeDoyle (talk) 00:45, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
