A very weak article

[edit]

The article is very weak and has many failures.

The article writes: "Due to the complex transition to democracy in Brazil, Sarney became the vice-president of Tancredo Neves, in the opposition ticket. Neves won the election of January 15, 1985, but on the eve of taking the oath he became severely ill. Sarney assumed office as acting president until Neves died on April 21, then he formally became the first civilian president in 21 years.

His succession raised some question because, as Tancredo nor him were formally inaugurated, the acting presidency should have passed to Ulysses Guimarães, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and new, indirect elections should have taken place within ninety days of Neves' death. Guimarães, however, did not contest Sarney's accession, perhaps because he believed that the military would not accept such a scenario[2].

Sarney and the president of Argentina Raúl Alfonsín started the process of the creation of a common market between the two nations in 1985. As first steps, they agreed to subsidize regional trade with a special currency for the purpose (the Gaucho (currency)). This agreement led to the formation of the Mercosul in 1991.

He had to face many problems; an enormous foreign debt, rampant inflation and corruption as well as completion of the transition to democracy. Sarney launched an economic plan to stabilize the economy, called "Plano Cruzado", successful at first, but the inflation became stronger than ever after a year. A new and democratic constitution was promulgated in 1988, and in the following year the first direct elections since 1960 were held.

Sarney left the Presidency at the end of his term. He supported Fernando Henrique Cardoso as presidential candidate in 1994 and 1998, and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2002. Since leaving the Presidency, he has been a senator, being the President of the Senate of Brazil from 2003 to 2005. Presently, he is again the President of the Senate, a role he assumed on February 2, 2009."

Many mistakes in these sentences. I'll show some of these mistakes:

1-José Sarney never was elected President of Brazil. He and Tancredo Neves were chosen by Brazilian Congress in 1985. In fact, José Sarney was against presidential elections by people; at least until late 1984. He gave orders to Brazilian Congress to chose 1989, not 1988 as the year for Brazilian Presidential election. 2-Since 1985, Brazilian Militaries never did nothing, in politics. Sarney declared himself as President and this fact was widely recognized for everyone. Since 1984 until his death, Ulisses Guimarães was ever in the Sarney's side and was his main supporter while Sarney was President. 3-José Sarney never had nothing, with the creation of the Mercosul in 1991. Fernando Collor not José Sarney was really responsable for the creation of the Mercosul. Durong Sarney's presidency(1985-1990) Brazil was closed than ever, for importations from anywhere in the world. Agreements with Argentina were linked to inspection to nuclear and some other things. The cooperation with Argentina in Embraer was a complete failure. 4-Sarney didn't launched only the "Plano Cruzado". He launched the "Plano Bresser" in 1987 and the "Plano Verão" in 1989. Both were a complete failure. In fact, Sarney's presidency ended in a terrible hyperinflation with rates at more than 230% in a month. 5-In Brazilian presidential election of 1994, Sarney gave support first support to Lula, but he became linked to Fernando Henrique Cardoso, when the Ibope put Lula behind Fernando Henrique Cardoso.

The article forgets many fact about the long political Sarney's changes. Sarney is also an owner of many press companies. He has a TV, many radios and a newspaper. About the Sarney's newspaper, this site: [Sarney's newspaper] has the official site of that newspaper. Agre22 (talk) 23:14, 2 August 2009 (UTC)agre22[reply]
