PM and Party Status
[edit]As I understand it, he's only caretaker PM. Should the info box reflect this?
More importantly, in SMH before he was elected I read him declaring that he was not currently a member of FRETILIN (even though he had been a founding member) but that he would accept their nomination of him as PM. Again, I think this need to be reflected. Nick 16:53, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- Re: the infobox - I don't think so. A caretaker PM is still the PM, no matter how long his term in office will be. Re: FRETILIN - Yes, if you or someone else can provide a link which cites his break (however tenative) with the organization. --(Mingus ah um 21:33, 9 July 2006 (UTC))
- Found this categorical statement "Although a founding member of Fretilin, Mr Ramos-Horta resigned his membership 18 years ago." [1]
- Will change the box accordingly. Nick 22:02, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- Nice article. Thanks for the link. Anyway, I have edited the introduction (to fix the chronology, include this source, etc), as well as the infobox (I cut his political party info down to "Independent," for his relationship with FRETILIN is now explained in the introduction). --(Mingus ah um 00:42, 10 July 2006 (UTC))
Does anybody know, why Ramos-Horta left the FRETILIN? --J. Patrick Fischer 13:13, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit]I will be attending a lecture by Dr Jose this coming thursday at the ANU so will hopefully be able to get a better picture of him for this article (one that doesn't make him look demonic like the present one). The bellman 05:11, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

His name
[edit]Should this article not refer to him as José Ramos-Horta? BBC News [2], CNN.com [3] and his official website [4] all give his name with a hyphen. (Incidentally, the Times doesn't seem able to make its mind up: [5] [6].)--Islomaniac 973 10:28, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
- The hyphen is a convention used in English names. His name is not English... FilipeS (talk) 17:49, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
- But not only English names - see Otto von Bismarck, Count of Bismarck-Schönhausen (German), Bror von Blixen-Finecke (Danish), and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Elena Kats-Chernin (Russian), all come to mind, and are counter-examples (or is that counter examples?) to the theory that the hyphen is an English-only (English only?) phenomenon. If Ramos-Horta spells it himself with a hyphen, who are we to disagree? -- Jack--of--Oz —Preceding comment was added at 11:36, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
job swap with Xanana
[edit]Last few days the Australian media have reported that Gusmao will run for PM (!) meaning that he and R-H will have swapped jobs; but I have read no further explanation.Note that ref to Gusmao will need to change ...Feroshki 05:36, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
unusual clothes style
[edit]Whenever I have seen Jr-H on TV, he is wearing a suit that looks like an Indian National style (ie no collar). I don't know enough about TL to know if this is also a TL folkloric/historical style; but I never notice anyone else so attired, even Xanana. Is it an eccentricity ? Feroshki 05:36, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
PM and President???
[edit]How is that possible? Or will he resign as PM? —MC 01:39, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
Heads of government and Nobel Peace Prize
[edit]Quote: "Currently he is, along with President Óscar Arias of Costa Rica, one of the two heads of governments laurated with the Nobel Peace Prize."
According to the List of current heads of state and government, as President he is no longer the head of government, although he is the head of state, while Arias holds both positions in his country. I've amended the sentence above to
"Currently he is, along with President Óscar Arias of Costa Rica and President Shimon Peres of Israel, one of the three heads of states laurated with the Nobel Peace Prize."
to reflect this, but I have only had time to do a quick run-through of all the other current heads of state to check that there aren't even more. If anyone feels like doing a more thorough check of the current heads of state, this would obviously be a good thing. The article states JRH as a founding member of Fretilin. A more accurate description is that JRH was a founding member of the ASDT, Associacão Social Democrata Timorense - Timorese Association of Social democrats. ASDT was founded in the spring of 1974 immediately after the revolution in Portugal. JRH was elected secretary general. On the 12:th of September 1974 ASDT was reorganized into Fretilin. Busan University of Foreign Studies
[edit]The infobox lists Busan University of Foreign Studies as an alma mater. I don't find this reflected in the body text where his education is discussed, or in his Nobel Prize biography [7], and I don't see a source. This was introduced by an edit in 2017 [8] with a link to ramoshorta.com in the edit summary, but I also don't find mention of Busan on that site. I'll remove Busan University of Foreign Studies and restore the others that are listed in the body text. --Amble (talk) 20:36, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
politics?
[edit]For an article on a politician we say very little about his actual politics. All we really have is that he supported the US war in Iraq. Secretlondon (talk) 13:03, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
- Secretlondon, I had to re-read the whole article after your comment and you are correct. I believe that there can be more work to add more information to the politics section and build it out. I did a quick search and could not find a lot of information on this topic. If you find sources, feel free to add them so we can build out the article. Jurisdicta (talk) 20:26, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
Second, third, or fourth PM?
[edit]I recognize that the changing status of East Timor complicates the numbering, but is he best referred to as the second PM (graf 3), third PM (infobox), or fourth PM (Prime Minister of East Timor)? Gowser (talk) 17:21, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
