Feedback from New Page Review process

[edit]

I left the following feedback for the creator/future reviewers while reviewing this article: I don't think you need to go through review for your new articles. Loved this one about someone I never would have known about. I'd say keep up the good work, but you've been doing it for so long, do not want to appear condescending. Thanks for the article.

More information to offer

[edit]

John Vincent Cain died not in September but on 7 August 1940, according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission at https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2711784/john-cain/ (which records his name simply as John Cain, although his middle name appears in his entry in the Shrewsbury General Cemetery's registers. He committed suicide in the village of Eaton Constantine in Shropshire and is buried in a war graves plot in Shrewsbury General Cemetery in Longden Road. I have seen the detailed inquest report, which goes into some of his background, in the Shrewsbury Chronicle, which I hope to revisit when I can next get to Shropshire Archives. He was a Private (though his burial register records he was Lance Corporal) in the London Scottish so I am sure this is the same man. The story was also studied by Peter Francis who mentioned his death in his book "A Matter of Life and Death: The Secrets of Shrewsbury Cemetery (2006).Cloptonson (talk) 17:22, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have now been able to study the inquest report myself, from the Shrewsbury Chronicle. Some of its detail may vary with that quoted from other newspaper sources. Much of the report is taken up with the story of his background narrated by his brother in a statement to police that was read out at the inquest, although the detail includes no mention of Max Wenner and Spanish Civil War activities. I will introduce some of it here.Cloptonson (talk) 16:42, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
