Some updates

[edit]

I have received the following to OTRS from the office of Mr. Portman. They have asked me to forward this to the discussion page rather than risk impropriety by editing the article directly, something which can only be applauded. I'd invite people to read the following and make any corrections that seem appropriate. It's fairly detailed.

The article contains the following sentence:

A graduate from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1950, Portman scored an immediate popular success with his innovative atrium hotel form used in projects like the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles and the Renaissance Center in Detroit.

Mr. Portman's success should not really be characterized as immediate. And, while he is quite well-known for his innovative atrium hotel designs, the one that was considered ground-breaking, set the tone for his practice and has been imitated throughout the hotel industry was his first, the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, which opened in 1967. It features a 22-story atrium. The designs for the Bonaventure and Renaissance Center, high-rise towers on podium bases, are nothing like the hotels designed around grand atriums.

Additionally, there are some inaccuracies in the Portfolio timeline.

Site currently says: 1957 AmericasMart, buildings 1-3, Atlanta Actually: What is now called AmericasMart was started in 1957 in an existing building. AmericasMart Building 1 was built in 1961. AmericasMart 2 was completed in 1992. AmericasMart 3 was completed in 1979. All of these buildings have been updated and added to throughout the years, with the latest addition, AmericasMart 2 West Wing, being completed in 2008.

Site currently says: 1965 Westin Peachtree Plaza, Atlanta Actually: The Westin Peachtree Plaza was completed in 1976.

Site currently says: 1971 Embarcadero Center, San Francisco & 1976 Hyatt Regency, San Francisco Actually: The Hyatt Regency San Francisco is part of Embarcadero Center, an 8-block, mixed use project completed in phases from 1971-1989. If you wish to list The Hyatt Regency on its own, it was completed in 1974.

Site currently says: 1976 Westin Bonaventure Hotel, Los Angeles Actually: The Westin Bonaventure was completed in 1977.

Site currently says: 1977 Renaissance Center, Detroit Actually: Renaissance Center was also built in phases. Phase I was completed in 1976. Phase II was built years later, completed in 1988.

Site currently says: 1985 Peachtree Center, Atlanta Actually: Peachtree Center is Mr. Portman's original large, multi-block, mixed use urban project. It is ever-evolving. The first building was completed in 1961. The latest opened in 2008.

Site currently says: 1985 One Nashville Place, Nashville Actually: This is not a Portman project.

Site currently says: American Cancer Society Center Inforum, Atlanta Actually: The building opened as the Inforum in 1989. It has since been taking over by the American Cancer Society as its headquarters building.

At the very bottom of the page, there is a link to John C. Portman at Emporis. No such page exists. However, it would be possible to link to the John Portman & Associates page at Emporis, if you think that would be appropriate. I've pasted the link below.

If you want to give links to all Mr. Portman's enterprises, in addition to the architectural firm and the development company, Mr. Portman owns AmericasMart http://www.americasmart.com/ and ADAC http://www.adacatlanta.com/.

I believe that Sharky's Machine was filmed at the Peachtree Plaza & not the Hyatt in Atlanta. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharky's_Machine_(film) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.4.236.27 (talk) 04:14, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
