Chicago fire reference

[edit]

The reference to the Chicago fire is not in the correct chronological order. The Great Fire was in 1871. Any ideas?

Neutrality of Sand Creek Massacre

[edit]

This section uses words like "unfairly" to show bias for John Evans, and goes on to qualify his commemoration in Colorado as "much like" the way modern American soldiers are commemorated for war-time battles in the Middle East. It's extremely disheartening to see a Wikipedia article with this much blatant favoritism.

Evans' letters are not mentioned here, in which he rejected the accusations against him; see, f.e., "Indians of the Pikes Peak Region", by Irving Howbert, pp. 145. Same thing with other witnesses on his behalf. Instead, such "evidence" as NPR articles are cited. It is quite obvious to any impartial historian that this matter is far more complicated than it is depicted here in this entry. Possible explanations for Evans' policy range from a) unjustified hatred towards Indians, b) justified fear of an all-out attack on Colorado settlers, c) hysterical misinterpretation of the situation ("Thukydides Trap?), d) ignorance of Indian culture and social/political structure (chiefs could in reality hardly speak for whole tribes, not even for bands, as membership was fluctuating, e) simple communication problems. To name only a few. 2A02:1210:3ECB:2600:852:6A78:4A5D:3C24 (talk) 17:20, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Property he sold

[edit]

While away, the property he sold was lost in the Great Chicago Fire.

If he'd already sold it, how did this affect anything? Valetude (talk) 02:28, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
and how did he get rich? founding hospitals, etc does not seem to be a way to amass a fortune — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.38.155.134 (talk) 17:46, 6 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Lincolns Approval?

[edit]

"An order by Evans to shoot on sight any member of any tribe had been approved by Lincoln." Is there a citation? Did Lincoln like blacks more than natives? Flight Risk (talk) 23:51, 3 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
