Birth Date
[edit]I am currently reading a book all about John Benbow written by navel expert Sam Willis, and it claims that information surrounding Benbow's birth is disputed - no one knows exactly when or where he was born, just that it was probably around 1650/1651 and that he may have lived in London until he was around 13 years old. The citation given here merely links to a small page on the royal navy museum website about Benbow, and lists no actual evidence apart from that stated on this page which may itself be inaccurate (it even has a disclaimer at the bottom of the page). Since his childhood is a complete mystery it seems odd to me that it has not been explored in more detail here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hazmog (talk • contribs) 22:11, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Glorious Revolution?
[edit]Two problems here - the Glorious Revolution can hardly have affected Benbow's childhood since it took place in 1688... and my history books tell me two captains were brought back to England and shot. Kirby and Wade if I remember right. Not one as stated. Hope this helps.--Boulet rouge (talk) 13:01, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Just a stylistic note...
[edit]The article reads well until the end. We read about the 1702 Battle, then some personal trivia, more trivia (this time about Russians), then the aftermath of the battle of 1702 (one presumes) is revisited. Maybe some editing is in order. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.177.117.24 (talk) 20:07, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
Pronunciation?
[edit]How is Benbow pronounced? Does it rhyme with "rainbow" or with "fen cow"? Pirate Dan (talk) 20:06, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
- It's Ben as in Pen, and bow as in crow. Benbow/Pencrow. SGGH ping! 13:01, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- Or, more easily, ben as in the name, and bow as in the item of clothing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.11.117.141 (talk) 19:29, 10 August 2013 (UTC)

Association with a corpse?
[edit]The article states, "...the family's association with Charles I in the years following his execution..." -- doesn't this sound rather ghoulish? I would rephrase "...the family's association with Charles I ensured that the "family were brought very low" in the years following his execution." --Death Bredon (talk) 18:19, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

What does this refer to?
[edit]"Benbow was appointed to command a squadron in the Soundings in December 1696."
Clearly the Soundings is a location, and the context appears to me to indicate somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. But there is no English WP article for "The Soundings", and an internet search does not reveal to me any single location termed "the Soundings" or even just "Soundings". I feel that, unless an article that would otherwise explain all this has been inadvertently deleted from Wikipedia, the sentence here ought to be expanded to describe exactly where Benbow was assigned.
