Dates of rank
[edit]Two discrepancies:
- Though the Marine Corps biography puts Howard's promotion to gunnery sergeant in 1968, he received his Medal of Honor from LBJ in 1967. The photo on the Navy's USS Howard DDG 83 website profile of Howard shows him receiving his medal, with clearly visible GySgt chevrons.
- The Marine Corps biography lists him as GySgt. The usual format for these biographies is to list final rank. However, the Navy site above, as well as other references in this article indicate that he retired as a first sergeant.
As a result of the above, I did not include dates for promotion to GySgt and 1stSgt; and put his final rank as 1stSgt. —ERcheck (talk) @ 03:03, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Gunny Jimmie Howard
[edit]He was stationed MCRD San Diego in 1968-1969! We had the Honor to serve with Gunny Howard in 68 and My Bride to be L/Cpl Loretta Walter and Myself CPL John Gordon Became good friends with him and invited him to our wedding on Nov,27,1968 but he gave us his regrets as he was called to Washington DC for a MOH Conference with Joint Chiefs and the President! He was more than a HERO he was a friend! We were upset with him when he went back to Vietnam for another tour in 1969 and after handshakes he gave us Hugs and promised us he would come back but his troops and duty called him back to Nam!
