Questions about an edit
[edit]I've a couple of problems with this edit, including the changes to reference styles. Can someone more familiar with the subject check it out? Thanks. Xiner (talk, email) 01:30, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
- It has been reverted by another user. Wachholder0 02:44, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
I added information from a weekly newspaper about a local writer's participation in the 're-education' of Jim Zumbo at Ted Nugent's ranch in Texas. This was sourced material. It was deleted by 'Rydra Wong'as 'satiric material.' It was an honest summary of a reputable newspaper report. Who the hell is Rydra Wong to decide what is or is not 'satiric material' without checking the print source. Is she or he another Essjay? Does sourced material mean nothing in this program? user jbarton@tstar.net
- To be "another EssJay", I would have to claim credentials I do not have. I claim no such credentials. I think you misunderstood my reasoning for removing the "reeducation" piece. I thought it was quite humorous but since you provided no citation and your indication that it was by a "humour writer", I didn't think it was a factual occurrence. Satire is inappropriate for the encyclopedic nature of the article. If I am incorrect and this was a factual occurrence, please cite it properly and reinstate it. -- Rydra Wong 03:40, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
- The bit about Jim's "re-education" is ok. But who participates and what they do it's relevant. I think THAT'S where the problem is. Anything beyond saying that it happenbed at Ted Nugent's ranch is non-encyclopedic. (Side note... chill with the name calling. Be civil please.)'—Thernlund (Talk | Contribs) 04:19, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
- I've done a good bit of searching for evidence of the article in question but haven't found anything. However I have found a reference to Kendall Hemphill at the website of Texas Fish and Game [1] which reads in part: "Kendall Hemphill is a bit difficult to classify. Although ostensibly our new news commentator, communicating with him is like trying to have a serious conversation with Uncle Fester from the "Addams Family." For instance, he sent two versions of his biography--an "interesting" one and a "truthful" one. Below are elements from both. See if you can tell which is which." [2] Regarding the "reeducation of Zumbo" I still suspect satire. -- Rydra Wong 04:54, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why you suspect satire. To be honest, I'm not sure what you mean at all. Jim Zumbo going to Ted Nugent's ranch for an education on black rifles it fairly easy to verify, and among gun folks it's a pretty well known fact. Zumbo himself said as much. What's satirical about that? —Thernlund (Talk | Contribs) 22:15, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
- You're right. I edited (and responded to comments) before collecting all the information available. I should have assumed good faith on the part of the anonymous user and I did not. I owe the user an apology. -- Rydra Wong 00:07, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
From "The Junction Eagle" a weekly Texas newspaper,junctioneagle.com.,March 7th, 2007, Outdoors Outback by Kendall Hemphill:
- "Ted (Nugent) invited Don (Zaidle) and I to his ranch last weekend to spend an afternoon with Jim Zumbo, who has been one of the most respected outdoor writers in this country for the last forty years...But Jim made a mistake which cost him his television show on the Outdoor Network, caused his sponsors to abandon him, and pretty much derailed his, till then, brilliant career... So Ted decided Jim needed an education, and didn't see any point in waiting around. We met at his ranch less than two weeks after the horrible blog hit the internet, with the idea of giving Jim a firsthand look at AR-15 type guns, and letting him see how useful they can be as hunting firearms. Ted's email to me about the effort said, "Bring black guns and ammo," so my friend, Joel Draper, and I loaded up as many guns as we could get in my Jeep before we headed for the Spirit Arrow ranch. Ted, Joel, Don, and I spent the better part of an afternoon answering Jim's questions. He had no idea what a forward assist was, didn't recognize a bayonet lug, and was generally unfamiliar with fun guns... Jim gets it now, and his mistake has opened a lot of other hunters' eyes, too."
The reference to Essjay was not exactly about claimed credentials. There just may be more to the world than what Rydra Wong suspects. It isn't that hard to find The Junction Eagle on the net.The Eagle article includes a photo of Zumbo, Nugent, Hemphill and Zaidle standing together holding aloft beverage cans as if making a toast. Kendall Hemphill's web address is jeep@verizon.net. respectfully submitted by jbarton. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.166.186.69 (talk • contribs)
- I was wrong on this. I should have assumed good faith editing on your part before reverting and responding to your comments. You have my apologies. -- Rydra Wong 00:07, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
- The "Essjay incident" was about credentials and has no bearing here. You were out of line in making such a comment. Please read WP:AGF. Also, it would be helpful if you signed your comments. If you don't know how, you can do so by putting "~~~~" at the end of your post whichm will sign it for you. Thanks. —Thernlund (Talk | Contribs) 22:15, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
If possible, I would like to help to clear the air on this issue, since I seem to be a topic of discussion here. My weekly outdoor humor column, which runs in several Central Texas newspapers, is mainly satire, but it would be impossible to avoid including some facts. My monthly column in Texas Fish & Game magazine is political commentary and the goal is education, so accuracy is essential. That one is heavy on opinion sometimes, but my opinions are usually easily discernable from the facts.
If anyone has any questions concerning any of my columns they are free to contact me. I would be happy to explain any statements made, and welcome feedback. No one is perfect, and beyond the mistakes I inevitably make, I don't expect everyone to agree with my opinions. Sincerely, Kendal Hemphill
- If you see a problem, please boldly fix it. You are also a wikipedia editor. Thanks, Wachholder 19:47, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- I removed a couple sentences that are clearly not NPOV, not cited, and terribly vague. For example, I removed the phrase that Zumbo
- "denounced a statement by an anti-gun senator and exposed his strategy to continually work his flawed words in the Congressional Record, and attended a three day assault rifle course. Zumbo wrote about his experience in an article in SWAT magazine"
- The "anti-gun senator" is not named, and the phrase "to continually work his flawed words in the Congressional Record" is ridiculously non-neutral. Who are you to judge which words are "flawed"? Also, the phrase "anti-gun" is also non-neutral. Perhaps "pro-gun control" might be more accurate, but because he's not named, how can we know?
- The line about his writing in SWAT magazine might be relevant, but it's not cited. If you want to put it back in, please include a citation.
- Also, referring to veterans as "heroes" is also non-neutral. I deleted it.
- The whole "Comeback" subsection has no sources. It sucks. If citations aren't added, perhaps the whole section should be deleted. Or fixed.
