While this Wikipedia page has a great basis for information, it could be improved with some more detail on the significance and the history of Jewish Delicatessens as they exist in the United States. Through our reading of the book Pastrami On Rye: An Overstuffed History of the Jewish Deli, by Ted Merwin, we have encountered many interesting facts on the origins of the delicatessen that will help flesh out the current Wiki page. Merwin is a particularly reliable source,as seen through his background as a professor of Judaic studies as well as the publication of the book through New York University Press, an accredited academic publisher. All together we will be adding about two subsections, each one with one paragraph. Those sections will be the origins of the Jewish Delicatessen, and the impact of Jewish Delicatessens. Relevant information which we would include would be the commercial successes of Jewish immigrants, their process of assimilation to American culture, and the development of the Delicatessen model over time . In terms of the origins of the delicatessen we will talk about the transition from Jewish-owned butcher shops to delicatessens, as this was one of the many ways in which Jewish immigrants attempted to assimilate to American culture; buying and selling meat.[1]Hlerner02 (talk) 23:48, 3 May 2023 (UTC) In terms of the impact of the delicatessen, we will add a small portion of about how the delicatessen functioned as each individual Jewish communities backbone, safe haven and source of comfort, especially within the context of the post-war period.[2].
