Old discussion

I understand the point of those saying that to mention Lopez's ass on her wikipedia page would be "sexist and shallow" and "beneath" such a serious encyclopedia as wikipedia aspires to be. HOWEVER, so is our culture sexist and shallow, and so is J.Lo willing to profit from it. She would not be anywhere near as famous or successful as she is if not for her ass. The Vida Guerra page, today, mentions right away that she's known for her large butt. As Vida Guerra begins a singing and acting career in earnest, will that be edited out? Of course not, nor should it. Lopez got the opportunities she has had based in large part on her having a large ass. This is just the truth. She's not a great actress, not a great singer, not a great dancer. But we're in a sick age, she had a huge ass, people found it attractive, and she became a superstar. Now she's famous for being famous, besides being rich, so much so that she could afford to lose her ass (as she has). But it was her sole claim to fame for a long time, and remains her only distinguishing characteristic. To not mention the reason for her fame on her encyclopedia page is negligent and disingenuous.

I'm no J. Lo scholar, but isn't she known virtually exclusively as "J. Lo" nowadays. The Puff Daddy article is at P. Diddy, and real people (not paid to talk about him) still call him Puff Daddy an awful lot. Should this be moved? Tokerboy

I have heard her referred to as Jennifer López at least as much as J. Lo, which is perhaps less recognisable, so I would suggest keeping the title. Enchanter

Definitely needs a NPOV edit. As currently stands this is a fanpage. -- Cimon Avaro on a pogo-stick 15:41 19 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I'm at lost with Jennifer López, a presumably young enthusiast is adding POV material under anonymous IPs 67.39.46.8 and 68.78.49.170, and my interest in J.Lo. is too low for me to bother correcting this for too long. --FvdP 19:37 22 Jul 2003 (UTC)

She is noted as one of the first Hispanic actresses to achieve mainstream success in major Hollywood roles.

If you consider Rita Hayworth to have been Hispanic, I think this line applies to her rather than to Jen. I would say that in the current generation of Hispanic actresses, Lopez would be in the first rank, perhaps with Salma Hayek and Cameron Diaz. 209.149.235.254 21:57, 24 Apr 2004 (UTC)

She's very popular everywhere.

No Way J-Lo is anywhere near first, nor is she anywhere near Salma Hayek's calibre, let alone Rita Hayworth, just to go with the actresses mentioned above. Is there actually any credible source that states she is even a good actress? I've watched a LOT of movies and never seen her in a good movie with a good performance from her. Birthdate

So was she born in '69 or '70? --KayEss 16:14, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • Most sources say 1970. Per magiastrology.com, it was '69. They present a good argument, but I can't trust someone with their point of view, and I haven't found corroborating evidence yet. DDerby 19:46, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hairmetal4everHer arrest report from 1999, when she was arrested with P. Diddy, said 1969. She certainly wouldn't be the first celebrity to shave a year or two off her real age.

I fits 1969, change it to 1969 in ever section it is mentioned please. With respect, Deliogul 16:47, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

There needs to be that awards show photo of her in the provocative dress and there needs to be a photo of her backside. :-) -Amit

Gay Icon Project

In my effort to merge the now-deleted list from the article Gay icon to the Gay icons category, I have added this page to the category. I engaged in this effort as a "human script", adding everyone from the list to the category, bypassing the fact-checking stage. That is what I am relying on you to do. Please check the article Gay icon and make a judgment as to whether this person or group fits the category. By distributing this task from the regular editors of one article to the regular editors of several articles, I believe that the task of fact-checking this information can be expedited. Thank you very much. Philwelch 21:08, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Sincer Jennifer López has often been mentioned in South Park and wikipedia has articles on each South Park episode, then I propose that someone add links to this Jennifer López article to each south park episode that it has been in. I have not edited the article as I am leaving this task to those who traditionally do to avoid a content dispute. Thodin 23:30, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Buddhist?

The article should explain why she is in the buddhists category.

I agree that the article should mention something about her becoming a Buddhist but I can't figure out where in the article would be the best place to include it. Any ideas? And as far as my source is concerned, here's a website: http://www.zenunbound.com/celebbuds.html. If that is not a reliable enough source then there are many many more articles on here which should be changed due to the source not being reliable enough. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Vocal range

Can someone please WP:CITE a source for Ms. Lopez's vocal range? Hall Monitor 17:58, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

Its probably 1 octave, with all the special audio effects added to the recordings. Junathans 20:07, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

What is "sexist"? Her whole career is based on her being regarded as a sexy, desirable woman. There is nothing shallow about the Ms. Lopez buttocks. Especially as they rate as her most outstanding feature, the one that most women allegedly envy, if one is to believe the lifestyle features of the popular press. Also she was reportedly disgruntled about a film poster on which they were airbrushed smaller. Speaking of which, what about the reports that her prima donna antics and demands make Naomi Campbell seem coquettish by comparison? Sweetalkinguy 10:03, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

I think that it should stay on wikipedia, in fact, there should be more information about it. It is very well known, even well known enough to have a page of its own.Tkma 14:05, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

At least, a well-rounded section of this Jennifer López article should continue to discuss her ass; which has, deservedly, received such accolades and acclaim. Don't be stingy with the ass y'all, the people are clamoring for it. Alexander 007 08:07, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

That butt looks that way because of a doctor...just like Selena both had this operation done..along with lipo look at JLO pre Selena..she was chunky but by no means was she big butted...wide but not like she is now..she's also had her face/nose done.. Miami has been a hot spot for this for since I was young...Cuban & Brazilian women made this operation big. this is like people givin credit to pam anderson for her boobs and face...doctors made them that way. www.betterbuttocks.com

This is hilarious! If a vote is taken regarding the pic of her ass, my vote is to KEEP IT! unless only admins get to vote, but I still say KEEP IT! Oh my god thank you for that beautifull picture of J.Lo's budongadong. I think previous estimates of 215 cm in circumference were way too conservative. Kuracalhos 15:31, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Haha

If we add pics of her ass then we should also add them to Beyonce's and Janet Jackson's page, as they are known for their big rumps too. In fact Janet Jackson was the first to be known for a big rump. But light skinned near white J.Lo comes along and White people act ridiculous. Now it's ok for white folks to come out of the closet and admit that you like a big ole ass. But when it comes to black women there is a double standard. You people disgust me! Film career?

While the article includes Lopez's filmography, there doesn't seem to be much coverage of her film career here. Lopez was established as an actress before she began her music career. Did coverage of her movies get cut out from a prior version or was it never included? --Metropolitan90 04:53, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

I was about to say the same thing. I even tried to scour the page history. --FuriousFreddy 02:24, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

Mariah Carey Ordeal

This wiki page is in no way related to Mariah Carey, and hearsay should not stand merit, a policy Wikipedia does not tolerate. Mearly stating so many times that Jennifer followed Mariah Carey's ways of doing this or that is not only redundant, but also downright petty and ignorant. Therefore Ms. Carey's name has been removed from his article. No one knows the truth behind this whole "sample" issue. And Mariah is not the first nor last to put a rapper on a pop song. It has been done before, i.e Patti Labelle's hit "Feels like another one" ft. Kool Mo Dee... hmmm relased almost 10 years before fantasy.

Measurements

IMPOSSIBLE- Very voluptuous women have a butt of about 100 cm. 190 cm is just absurd. She would be 300 lb. I'v e seen this number on other pages but it is either a joke or a lie. Please use common sense.Bmcassagne 14:08, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

I am sorry but you are in error. Her measurements have been confirmed by a number of sources and as a matter of fact it is not at all impossible. Your comment was deleted. ProfDamien 05:39, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
It doesn't matter if it has been confirmed. You can also confirm that this is not possible by looking at any playboy magazine in the world or by finding someone with 190 cm buttocks and comparing them to Jennifer. It is highly unlikely that her measurements are over 110 cm. See http://www.100percent-online.com/jennifer_lopez/biography.asp Bmcassagne 06:00, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Why is it not valid to contradict false information with factual information? What I'm stating can be easily verified. I'm not asking for the statement to be removed, but it is irresponsible to list such preposterous information with out allowing some type reasonable statement to the contrary. "Jennifer López's derriere has been estimated to be between 190 and 215 cm in circumference by People Magazine and The National Inquirer." Why has this sentence been deleted?

I have a normal built and my circumference is almost 100 cm, but I am also 177 cm tall (5ft 10"), J-Lo is much smaller as I understand. 195 would be if you stuck 4! of me close together and than measure our circumference! PETA Section

I question the usage of the PETA article, a link should suffice as the article seems to be heavily biased towards PETA's POV. Although some parts of the article may be true, the article as a whole sounds more like opinion than fact.

she is a really good singer and actress

Her Giant Butt

Her butt is so Huge! You gotta admit, That butt makes her look Hot! Im Still Asking myself the question. Does She know shes famous for her butt? Someone get a good picture of her butt

I don't know, I kinda agree that it's a bit relevant. I feel embarassed saying this, but her rear end is certainly a part of her fame. I think she is a gorgeous woman, but that's not relevant. She reminds me of my old home, New York City.

Blue-eyed soul

Do you guys think we should include the blue-eyed soul category on this article? Well, she's not exactly Caucasian, but she's not African American either.

I think she'd be brown-eyed soul. RattleandHum 15 January 2007

Street-Team or just gratuitous

This entire paragraph seems to have been mashed up by someone’s street-team in order to get some buzz going: "Recently Jennifer López has discovered a new amazing talented singer named Daniella Haley in Surrey Guildford. Apperently she doesn't know this news yet but Jennifer López's publistist have been in Guildford and discovered this most talented girl in Guildford yet. She sung a song by Celine Dion from the movie Titanic "My Heart Will Go On" in a music lesson. Since then Virgin and MTV records have been trying to look for her and she will be informed very soon."

I wasn't quite comfortable just deleting it, however. Anyone else’s thoughts? --Lowellt 19:07, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Diacritic/accent mark on her last name

Recently, someone added diacritics (accent marks) to her last name in the article title and every reference to her last name in Wikipedia. From what I can tell, her name doesn't have an accent mark or, at the very least, she doesn't use it in her stage name. Therefore, I think all the changes should be reverted. Someone took a lot of time to make these changes and i'm confused as to why. I changed the article title, but reverted so I could get an explanation first. Crumbsucker 08:33, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

If you look at the history here it has been moved back and forth a few times recently from Lopez to López and the other way, though none by me. It was López when I decided to make all the spellings consistent across the related articles. I think you might be correct and perhaps it should be Lopez. Phildav76 09:26, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
It is spelled "Lopez" without the accent mark on all her album covers and film posters, so the current title seems correct. --musicpvm 22:13, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
In that case, she doesn't even know how to write her family name, because it's López according to the Spanish accentuation rules. Indeed, it's a BIG spelling mistake, because you change position of the marked syllable. LÓPEZ is pronounced /'lo peθ/ or /'lo pes/, as you pronounce it in English actually, if LOPEZ existed, i would be pronounced /lo'pes/ ot /lo'peθ/, and in serious publications written in Castillian, you will find LÓPEZ, but well since this is not a serious publication, you can do whatever you want; but in those rules about articles you shield, try to input clearly that you do it because you and/or the person you write are ignorant.Gaudio 10:10, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
It is not a spelling mistake when it's her name. Jennifer LOPEZ (without the accent) is her stage name. We have no right to format it to what certain people think is correct spelling. People can spell their proper names however they'd like to; there is no wrong or right spelling with names. The right spelling is whatever spelling she chooses to use. "López" may be used by other people, but not by Jennifer. Maybe we should move the Britney Spears article to "Brittany Spears" because that's the more common/accepted spelling of "Brittany". --musicpvm 16:56, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
The English Wikipedia uses English spellings. HenryFlower 10:44, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
I agree that this page should now stay as "Jennifer Lopez" as that is what she is commonly known by and how it is spelled on her album covers. On the other hand it doesn't mean all Lopez's should have their accents removed such as Andrés Manuel López Obrador. -- Phildav76 18:27, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
In that case, you should change her real name at the beginning of the article, because that's not really up to her; but as usually, you don't. And as i said, the spelling López ,for her, is used in several places, because is a BIG Castillian orthography mistake. You can even find places where the names are non-accentuated in the beginning, but later, they are accentuated, as with Pedro Almodóvar in his first films for instance, because they just don't realise or don't know. The person who removed the accent in this article (Crumbsucker) has a little obsession with removing accents actually, although the accents are oficially in people's website or publications, you should consider that too, but well, do whatever you want, you think others' opinions (although formed and documentated opinions) are not very important, but try to write about that in your sacrosanctrules Gaudio 09:31, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
has a little obsession with removing accents actually Perhaps because of your obsession with falsely adding them. She is commonly credited as Lopez, including on the her website. It IS up to her how she spells her name, whether you like it or not. She could spell it "Jenifer Lowpez" if she wanted to and there'd be nothing you could do about it. Crumbsucker 04:16, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
No, actually i removed some accents too, we have already talked about that. I found no place where she says specificly her family name is not accentuated, and anyway as i said you should accentuate her real name, because that's not up to her but to RAE if it is Spanish. And as i said too, in birth certificates and I.D's and things like that, you seldom find accents, but anyway you have to use them; you have used them in wikipedia and as i said it could be a problem Gaudio 06:10, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Forget her birth certificate, every reference to her name on *her own website* is "Lopez." That is how she spells her name and that is what Wikipedia goes with, not whatever you want. Crumbsucker 11:38, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Do you read what people say? I'm afraid it's YOU who do whatever YOU want, i have spoken you about limitations with some keyboards, with capital letters, changes of rules for the accentuations, etc, etc, etc, etc, and i found no place where she says specificly her family name has no accents. Anyway her real name is López, and that's not up to me or her or you or the USA government. With Céline Dion, they had a problem like this, and they decided to preserve the accent in her real name but the name without the accents as the name of the article, but well, you haven't heard about consensuses or things like that and you have even removed some accents in articles where the people even accentuated (going against your beloved rules), so what's the point of trying to make you understand? You have to be right and you have to have your way, instead of thinking you can find problems later as finding some articles twice, as with Antonio de la Gándara in Spanish. I know you have mo malice, but even the rules you used to remove the accents in the articles or whatever, don't consider all the situations we can find here. Gaudio 17:16, 23 July 2006 (UTC) 17:16, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
i found no place where she says specificly her family name has no accents. You have no evidence of the opposite either, so moving the article to López was completely baseless. Celine Dion is a different case because she has been credited with and without an accent. Jennifer Lopez, however, is never credited with an accent. Not one single/album cover and nowhere on her website. Sorry, but you don't get to make up names for people. Crumbsucker 03:48, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
No, as i told you Jennifer López has also been credited with the accent in the Spanish media, López is a very common Castillian family name, as Díaz, Gómez, García, Rodríguez, etc. The main problem with all this is that we don't know if in those places you say, she doesn't use the accent because she doesn't want or because she doesn't know her family name is accentuated and/or she or the person who wrote that website couldn't use the accents. I found the consensus with Céline Dion quite intelligent, because we can never know why those stage names have appeared with and without accents, but we can know at least how to accentuate the real names Gaudio 08:41, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
The main problem with all this is that we don't know if in those places you say, she doesn't use the accent because she doesn't want or because she doesn't know her family name is accentuated and/or she or the person who wrote that website couldn't use the accents. Who cares? She doesn't use one, so Wikipedia won't either. The people who write her website can easily add as accent mark if they wanted. Same with the people who make her cd covers. It's not like it's hard to do. Celine Dion has had album covers with and without an accent mark, but Lopez has never used a mark. You aren't allowed to change or "correct" people's names for them and there was no basis to move the page. Crumbsucker 14:58, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
Well, i do care, and lots of people too. There are more languages in these world, not only English. How many time do i have to tell you that i have basis to change those articles? At least, you have considered that some people have some limitations to put accents, you're finally understanding something. Gaudio 21:04, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
I guess it ultimately depends on what was written on her birth certificate (her legal name) and as she was born in the US I would be surprised if it was in fact without the accent. Another thing to remember is that in the English language press the accents are often discarded due to laziness. -- Phildav76 10:33, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
Mmmm, no, actually in my birth certificate and in my I.D (which are not from the USA) there are no accents in my names, because of a limitation wih capital letters, but they have accents according to Castillian grammar rules, this is actually a big problem, because lots of people are not sure of the right prononciation of their family namesGaudio 11:25, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

One's name is spelled as one spells it oneself

Whatever name she uses is what her name is. In fact, in California, you can legally change your name just by using a new name and only the new name. If she spells it that way, that's the way we should spell it. Including punctuation... ¡Pédąṇ†!

As i said several times, i found no places where she said specificly her last name has no accents, but...Gaudio 11:45, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
She doesn't have to say anything. You can just look at ALL her album covers, the OFFICIAL name of her brand (JLO by Jennifer Lopez), ALL her movie posters, etc. The accent has never been used. It is more than obvious that her stage name is Jennifer Lopez. Nothing else matters. --musicpvm 17:12, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
Well, i'm afraid she has to do it if she invents a new surname Lopez, which can be the real Spanish family name López, but as i told above, this is much more complicated than that, and in some cases those family names have lost their accent because of some limitations to write accents, sooooooooooooooo Gaudio 09:57, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
She signs her name as Lopez [1]. She's signed as and listed by the RIAA as Lopez [2]. She's credited in films as Lopez [3], which means she's signed to the Screen Actor's Guild as Lopez. At what point does it become clear that she considers herself and is widely (and in many cases legally) known as Jennifer Lopez? Luna Santin 19:43, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Well, but she's wrong, because that surname does not exist, because it's López, and if you look for Spanish accentuation rules instead of movie credits or websites where they could have problems with accentuation or they simply don't know these rules, maybe you can undestand why this page has been moved several times, but well Gaudio 15:34, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
If I may, here's how I'm currently looking at it: her real name may in fact be either of the two, but her screen name, pen name, professional name, the name by which she is known in the media and the public eye, the name she signs on legal documents relating to her public image, is Jennifer Lopez. It's not a question of accent marks being dropped -- in the case of the Screen Actor's Guild, whatever name you sign on your union card is the exact name they're required to list you as, in the credits. Multi-million dollar productions are perfectly capable of putting an accent mark on a scrolling document, if they wish (they regularly do so), and someone with as much pull and power as Lopez would surely be more than capable of getting her name spelled exactly the way she wants it to. For a more elucidating example, note that Samuel Clemens redirects to Mark Twain -- while the one was in fact his birth name, the other is the name by which he was professionally and historically known. I've clearly established that Lopez is known as such, legally and by the media. I can sympathize with your points, but in the case of her own name, the final authority is Lopez herself, and I would say that she's indicated a desire to drop the accent by explicitly, intentionally, and consistently doing so. A very large number of celebrities choose not to go by their birth names, and if she wants to Anglicize her professional name, I don't think we're in a position to question that without very strong reason. I won't say there's not room to disagree -- there is -- but as I see it there's a very strong case to keep the page where it is. *shrug* Luna Santin 15:54, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Yes, but you don't even want an accent in her real name, you said i loved vandalism when i do that, you have to read all the thing i wrote above too (it's the same with Céline Dion or Cameron Díaz, etc). These professional names are chosen (well, chosen, it's an expression, because some times they start with those names and they have to follow with them all their life) by the celebrities, but they are not their real names. And as i said before i found Céline Dion's consensus quite appropriate, because you can use Spanish or French or Sanskrit rules to know the correct accentuation and websites to know the professional name they use, but...Gaudio 16:37, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
I beg your pardon, but I don't recall ever having called you a vandal, or even having used the word "vandal" in this conversation -- if I recall incorrectly, feel free to enlighten me. It would be prudent of me to note that Céline Dion redirects to Celine Dion, and Cameron Díaz redirects to Cameron Diaz... unless you were referring to something else? Luna Santin 17:06, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
You in plural, not you in particular, Luna Santin (or Santín), when Cameron Diaz redirects to Cameron Díaz, it was the same, you can write Cameron Diaz to search that actress, and you find her, it was like that for mounths, but i was talking about real names, but well...Gaudio 17:27, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

This article should include a section about Lopez's use of fur and PETA's campaign against her. "Fur" is currently mentioned nowhere in the article, and it was a significant controversy that received a lot of media attention. --musicpvm 22:17, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Contradiction

Her "salaries" for films are obviously wrong. Look at the budgets for the films. E.g. Monster-In-Law's ENTIRE budget is estimated to be $60,000,000 (which was also her salary apparently) - Рэдхот 14:56, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Well should we remove them, or can someone correct them? - Рэдхот 10:37, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
I removed them. If someone finds a reliable source, they can add the salary section back to the table, but those numbers were ridiculous. --musicpvm 16:16, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Introduction is so small;please expand it

I have visited J.lo's article several times,u guys and gals(if any) did a great job.but one thing annoys me to be honest. The introduction of the article should be bigger than this;it could possibly be big by comprehending the other sections.Currently it just says Jennifer Lynn Lopez (born July 24, 1969), popularly nicknamed J.Lo, is an American actress, singer, songwriter, dancer, and fashion designer..(See as an example:Britney Spears). So please expand the introduction extensively to be a comprehension of the lower sections. And please don't say why don't u do it ur self.I don't know about this girl other than listening her songs.I just contribute in technology and computing articles. So I am not knowledgeable enough to write about this Lady.--didi 16:33, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Release of Como Ama Una Mujer

In an online news sites say November 2006 while other sites say Early 2007 will her latest album be released. Ericgo(November 6, 2006)

Even though this is kinda off topic can someone help the new list of best-selling remix albums worldwide with its structure. J.Lo is on it

Are you sure, that she was born in 1969? I have read in many other sources, that she was born in 1970!!! --212.25.63.200 21:54, 14 December 2006 (UTC)Mars
