17th century notion of metamorphosis

Does someone have a reference for the claim made that there was a 17th century idea that metamorphosis was a change from one kind of animal to another? I am not disagreeing with this - in fact, I agree with it (and I have a memory of having read it), so I'm not going to flag it in the main article - but it would be nice to have a reliable reference for it.
