Enough's enough - let others have their chance
[edit]- Naysmith - "I have now enough of this world's goods: let younger men have their chance"
- Apollo 13 - "I have been into space 4 times; others have yet to go for the first time." Tabletop 23:10, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
Typical Scottish pronunciation(s)
[edit]Alright all you Scottish Wikipedians, tell me, would you more typically say "ˈnɛzmɪθ" than "ˈneɪsmɪθ"? Time to school this American. I realize I could maybe figure this out myself with enough Web research, but my Scottish wikicolleagues might effortlessly save me the trouble. — ¾-10 22:15, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
Pronunciation in IPA
[edit]For non-Anglosaxon readers it would be very helpful if articles on people with "unpredictably" pronounced names would specify the correct pronunciation using the International Phonetic Alphabet. HHahn (Talk) 11:14, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
External links modified
[edit]Hello fellow Wikipedians,
I have just added archive links to one external link on James Nasmyth. Please take a moment to review my edit. You may add {{cbignore}}
after the link to keep me from modifying it, if I keep adding bad data, but formatting bugs should be reported instead. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}}
to keep me off the page altogether, but should be used as a last resort. I made the following changes:
- Attempted to fix sourcing for http://www.makingthemodernworld.org.uk/icons_of_invention/technology/1820-1880/IC.047/
When you have finished reviewing my changes, please set the checked parameter below to true or failed to let others know (documentation at {{Sourcecheck}}
).

Internal Contradiction on birthdates
[edit]There is a contradiction between the birth date shown for Nasmyth in the info box and the text. The info box shows 1807. The text shows 1808. I went and checked Encyclopedia Britannica (2023 on-line version). They say 1808. Just to be double sure I went and checked Encyclopedia Britannica, 1911. They also said 1808. So, I said, 1808 it is, and went in to edit the text box. The text box source code for his birth date says : birth_date = {{ Birth-date 'pipe' 19 August 1808 'pipe' 19 August 1807}}
where 'pipe' = |
(the editor won't let me just type what is in the text box, it tries to execute, so I hacked it up enough to fool it. Go and look at the real thing if my hack makes no sense)
I don't know what the 'pipe' 19 August 1807 means, or why it is there. I can only guess that whoever did it has a strong opinion on the subject of when Nasmyth was born, or was trying to do something complicated that I don't understand. ?? ???
So, I don't understand what is going on there, or what the person was trying to do. So I'm not going to edit it. But, here's a heads up to someone hopefully more knowledgeable than me: Something is definetely screwed up in the article about his birth date. The 1807 date seems clearly wrong. But I don't understand whatever it was the previous person was trying to do, so I am just posting this rather than edit the source code. DlronW (talk) 11:44, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
- Looks like somebody in the past was trying to do something fancy with the display style but made a typo. So I replaced
|birth_date = {{Birth-date|19 August 1808|19 August 1807}}
with|birth_date = {{Birth-date|19 August 1808}}

Nile Barrage
[edit]The is an error in the section on Nasmyth's pile driver. The Nile Barrage was a little upstream from Cairo, not at Aswan. The link goes to the Aswan Low Dam. This isn't correct, the pile drivers were purchased by Egypt from Nasmyth for the Nile Barrage. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_Barrage
Nasmyth in his autobiography specifically states the two pile drivers he sold to Egypt were for the Nile Barrage, near Cairo: see pg 282 DlronW (talk) 02:05, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
