Third Residence
[edit]I have it on good authority that Johnson has a home in Montecito, California. I know this because my Grandfather owns property down the street from him. Picture
[edit]Maybe it would be a good idea to get a better picture of him for the article. This one is blurry and you can't really tell the difference between him and any other guy in a white shirt. A close up would be nice, and one that's in focus. 99.227.21.101 (talk) 22:11, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
Bootlegs
[edit]Just a query - is it really ethical to discuss bootlegs of Johnson's music, and to have separate articles on them too? Is there a law, or Wikipedia guideline, against promoting illegal goods? Harro5 July 5, 2005 12:03 (UTC)
- I don't see what not. It's just information. It isn't a promotion of the illegal goods. conduit July 6, 2005
- Personally, if I knew how to effectively get them, I'd buy these illegal goods. I've tried to ge these songs from several sources and have failed repeatedly.--Brian E. January 4 2006
- A bootleg is generally considered a legal or at least legally grey recording of a live event which would otherwise not be recorded. I don't see any problem with documenting them -- 81.157.76.233 21:41, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

- For heavens' sake, or for heaven's sake? Practise what you preach! Willnz0 08:08, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
- To above poster- practise would properly be spelled with a c, practice, so don't jump on correcting apostrophes just yet! mikey 04:05, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
- Ahhh, no it wouldn't. I'm in New Zealand, therefore use British English. Practise is a verb and practice is a noun. Willnz0 00:41, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
- No, it really wouldn't correct English (in ENGLAND) would be practice.
- Wrong again. "Practise" in this example is the imperative form of the verb "to practise" and is therefore spelt with an s, as I did spell it. Are you arguing that it's not a verb, or that it is a verb and it should be 'practice'? Either way, in British English, you're wrong. (Practice would be right for an American.) Still don't believe me? Look it up: [1]

Jack Johnson
[edit]What's the big deal with Jack Johnson? Everyone seems to love him at the moment, but I don't see what all the fuss is about, his songs are not that good, and the musical elements of the song aren't all that impressive either... Anybody like to tell me what's so good about him? Being a budding guitarist myself, I can't get excited about his music; it's too simple and not impressive at all. Can't people support truly skilled guitarists (for example, Mark Knopfler, Carlos Santana, etc.) instead of banging on about average Jack Johnson? --şмίғғч™
- Much as I love Knopfler's work, he really doesn't seem to be all that interested in self-promotion (see: how he keeps disappearing from the spotlight, how he used to ask venues to turn their music down when they were starting out); Jack Johnson, on the other hand, is everywhere. And I think Santana's latest, Cry, hasn't been brilliantly received. -- Dandelions 14:33, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
- "His songs are not that good" is a subjective opinion. Obviously a lot of people enjoy his music, it just doesn't apply to you. If your contention is that there oughtn't be an article on him, then I could say there shouldn't be an article on Kenny Rogers because in my opinion, "his songs are not that good."63.230.76.110 05:01, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
- "Being a budding guitarist myself, I can't get excited about his music; it's too simple and not impressive at all." Hey, I'm also a guitarist and there was a time I would have agreed with you. But if you get into songwriting you'll appreciate (and may envy) his knack for flowing lyrics and memorable melody. Plus, he seems like a cool guy (most singer-songwriters seem like whiny, arrogant dorks).--MoShaw 18:18, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but there were way to many opinions in that question. How can you call someone "average" when every artist has his/her own different style? And simplicity isn't a bad thing; I personally like simple music. And Jack Johnson's music is almost theraputic. If you're trying to get away from all the bad things going on in your life, you're not going to listen to someone who cusses every third word. You're going to listen to something mellow and calm. And don't imply that Jack Johnson isn't a skilled artist, because he is. And I agree with MoShaw; I envy his songwriting ability. I'm a young poet (which is not all that different from a songwriter) and I can tell that everything he writes comes from his heart (corny, I know, but I can't think of another way to put it). You listen to the lyrics of "Traffic in the Sky", "Losing Hope", and "Constellations", and then tell me he isn't a great songwriter. 65.6.152.184 01:12, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Did anybody notice that noone actually answered that person's question?
- Well, as the above users pointed out, the only real, objective question posed was essentially "Why is Jack Johnson so popular when his music is so simple?" That's really a question of the majority's taste in music. Personally, I love simple music; I believe simplicity is what makes songs like "Seven Nation Army" stay in your head so long. However, not all of Jack Johnson's music is necessarily simple, and I like it all. I like Santana too; I have Supernatural on my iPod. Like I said though, it's really a question of the majority's taste. I think part of it is that, as you said you're a guitarist, so naturally you will appreciate more complex guitar music. Most people don't play instruments, so they appreciate simpler music (and generally despise classical). But that's just my opinion.
It's not about how many notes you play per minute, or how many FX pedals you have on your guitar.----I LIKE THIS LINE..JACK'S MUSIC IS A FEEL GOOD MUSIC..ITS NOT A SHOW OF "IM A GREAT GUITAR PLAYER THAN SANTANA" THING..I FEEL GOOD WITH WHAT I WRITE AND WHAT I PLAY AND THATS WHAT MATTERS :) Taongkahoy 14:17, 26 March 2007 (UTC)FLUFFY Sure, I like guitarists like Tom Morello who are about as far away as possible from Jack Johnson, but when I want to chill out a bit, artists like Jack Johnson just help me along. It's the same with people like Jose Gonzalez. And even if it doesn't float your boat, there's no need to go slamming him. I don't understand what people see in death metal, but I don't go attacking it. Jack Johnson's popular because a load of extremely tensed up people want to feel chilled out and think that buying a CD will help them.
First off, I don't think it really matters why people like him, they just do. And it's "simple" music, just as some of the Beatle's melodies were very simple and the words even more so. Some times beauty comes in simplicity. Also, his voice is very nice, anyway I think so. It soothes me in a way few voices do. I don't see the point in dissing him in an encyclopedia talk page anyway. I agree with Alessiasakura. The discussion page should be used to make suggestions on how to improve the article, not to talk about its general content. Jack324 (talk) 17:30, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
jack's music isnt supposed to be a guitar odyssey. i been playing guitar for 6 years now, and he's the reason i started...i will still play his music almost everytime i pick up my guitar. he just thinks of what sounds good. And he's not all that into self-promotion, and whatever money he recieves goes towards the environment or to the state of hawaii. the guy doesnt even own a tv. and his music wasnt supposed to make people argue or fight, it was just meant to sound good. (and he did a good job) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jackj0123 (talk • contribs) 04:20, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Jack Johnson is number one. He's an amazing person, he is laid back and relaxing with his music, and the lyrics are very well done and make you think. Nobody can master what he's done it just won't be the same. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.153.187.143 (talk) 00:11, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Red House
[edit]Is it important to talk about Red House's set? It doesn't have any impact on the rest of the article. If I wanted to know if Red House liked Pink Floyd, I'd read the article about Red House. Just looking for permission to remove that. In fact, that whole little section is pointless. He told him to "hold up." Awesome. It's really not a very notable story.
Vandalism?
[edit]I just reverted some vandalism on this article ([2]), but I'm not too sure about it. I removed the content because it was uncited and could easily be misinterpreted, but if this was indeed genuine (as some very suspicious content reverted by me has been in the past once) feel free to add it again and tell me on my talk page. --Draicone (talk) 10:53, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

THIS GUY ROCKS! he makes the best music, especially the lyricks are good, it gives me a relaxed feeling....
dude , i LOVE Jack Johnson. you wanna go up to my room and talk about it! dude we shouold meet up and play game cube. My name is CHAD!
What's up with the John Mayer reference. I don't understand why John Mayer fans hate Jack so much they don't sound anything alike. If anything Dave Mathiews fans should be pissed at John Mayer for stealing his sound. Jason B.68.94.164.217 05:55, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

jack johnson and sublime
[edit]just a question ive not been able to find a definitive answer to. . . did jack johnson actually ever *play* live with sublime, or even just bradley nowell? although it seems doubtful to me, a fairly credible person (meaning he had nothing to gain by lying. . .) told me of a video with bradley playing "back-up" guitar with johnson while johnson sang. based on the years mentioned in this article it seems improbable this is actually true, but i'd just like to know if anybody can definitively confirm or deny this. thanks. Why Jack is Jack
[edit]Jack is the musician he is because of his great voice. A lot of musicians today just want the 5 minutes of fame, when Jack, is all about the music. You don't ever see him at Hollywood events. He lives for music, thats what a true musician should do. Anybody disagree? Didn't think so.

Ben Stiller
[edit]I remember Jack had a video that had Ben Stiller in it. Would you know what it was? I think it might've been "Sitting Waiting Wishing".... Doc Strange 15:08, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
I believe that was the video for "Taylor" off the On and On CD. Look it up on youtube or something. Jordogo 06:54, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, the video with Ben is "Taylor".
Ben Stiller was also involved with "sitting waiting wishing". He was behind the camera on set (he even threw spaghetti at Jack).--Sean.nufer (talk) 03:45, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Age
[edit]Hey just to point out that on Jack Johnson's background information at a glance section (showing age, origin, genres, occupations, etc) theres a mistake on his date of birth... making him 12 years old!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.203.151.133 (talk) 09:43, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Citing Gereral Info
[edit]I have been doing research for roughly the past month on Jack Johnson. By the end of the week, I am going to be citing much of the info which need citations in the article.
- I am having trouble finding any information about the Alex Conell connection. If anyone has an input as to where I can find this this it would be much appreciated.
- Also, any input on the info about Jack and his wife traveling around Europe in a VW Bus would be great. Can anyone verify these claims? rwall23 12:50, 5 December 2007

Linking to this page
[edit]The search for Jack Johnson goes straight to this page, but I was wondering if that was the best thing for Jack Johnson to link to. The Boxer Jack Johnson is arguably more historically famous and well-known than the modern musician, it might be better to link Jack Johnson with a list of various people of that name as exists in the disambiguation for Jack Johnson. I just don't think the current situation is the most favorable, although I may be somehow convinced otherwise. Post comments, lets discuss (PlasticMan (talk) 02:57, 30 June 2008 (UTC))
I agree--while the musician may be more well-known at the moment, the boxer is an incredibly important historical figure. Per the disambiguation page there is also a professional hockey player with the same name. IMO the search for Jack Johnson should go to the disambiguation page at the very least, and if it has to link to any particular article, I'd choose the boxer. Damageisle (talk) 16:45, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
I also agree. Jack Johnson the boxer is incredibly important. But, while I agree that the boxer is more historically important, there's no doubt that Jack Johnson the musician is quite popular right now, even if he isn't going down as a groundbreaking musician. Send it to disambig.K1da42 (talk) 17:23, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
I agree as well. I was looking for Jack Johnson the world-class boxer and to be redirected to a second-rate singer for overpampered teenagers is something of a joke.209.2.212.202 (talk) 14:04, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
I imagine 95% of people searching for 'jack johnson' are not searching for the boxer DegenFarang (talk) 07:05, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
- The landing page for Jack Johnson need to be directed to the boxer. --Jsderwin (talk) 01:51, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- There is a process for determining the primary disambiguation page on Wikipedia. And it appears to be currently resolved that "Jack Johnson" goes to the dab page. This could be due to the fact that there is no primary dab page, or simply because nobody has determined if one exists. Viriditas (talk) 13:24, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Discography
[edit]There really should be a new page for his discography! Far too much on his artist page. Adam2201 (talk) 16:17, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
- Start it :) DegenFarang (talk) 12:54, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
I've just started the Jack Johnson discography page, got the albums, live albums, EPs and singles on there. Just need help with the rest: Video albums, Soundtracks, Other appearances, Music videos, Remix album etc. Feel free to help everyone! I've tried to make it as detailed as possible, I copied the formatting of John Mayer's discography for the most part but maybe someone could add the chart performance for other countries (such as the countries in the table in the Singles section) as I didn't know how to incoparate that into the same table. Adam2201 (talk) 17:02, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
- Wow, nice work. I have no idea how to do any of that so can't help, sorry. Looks great though DegenFarang (talk) 23:41, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not sure I agree with cutting out everything you did because there is another article for the discography. Typically when there is a second more detailed article, there is still some fairly substantial content on the main article. Now all you left is his studio albums. I think at least his popular singles can be there, if not a lot more. DegenFarang (talk) 03:10, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- Most popular musicians/bands pages just have a small section for discography (if they have a seperate discography page) which only shows their studio albums and a Main Article link to the discography page. Look at Switchfoot, John Mayer, Fall Out Boy, Foo Fighters. I just used the same idea. Adam2201 (talk) 19:06, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Edit warring around anti-Life is Beautiful Festival
[edit]Between 25 October 2013 & 7 November 2013, there have be a number content deletions & reverts concerning this text:
In October 2013, Johnson spearheaded an anti-Life Is Beautiful Festival in Las Vegas, NV. Johnson's Life Is Shit festival consists of local Vegas punk acts protesting the bloated Life Is Beautiful festival that was created by Zappos mogul Tony Hsieh's Downtown Project organization. When asked about the purpose of the festival, Johnson told a reporter, “We’re just capitalizing on the attention...the party spirit is contagious”." Las Vegas looks for national attention, cultural credibility with new indie music festival". The Washington Post. Retrieved October 25, 2013.[dead link ]
I have not been involved with these IP removals of the text, but it looks like the Jack Johnson named is a different lad altogether. Please read:
- Ryan, Erin (2013-11-03). "Snapshots from anti-fest Life Is Sh*t". Las Vegas Weekly. Henderson, NV: The Greenspun Corporation. Retrieved 2013-11-09.

Note that this does not excuse the anonymous IP editors for failing to leave an edit summary, but otherwise I do believe that they removed the text in good faith & with good reason.

Is there anybody involved with this page? I've put together a couple of paragraphs that I believe establish notability (Johnson's #1 records) and focuses more on what Johnson's current focus is today (ecology and sustainability). Full disclosure:I'm a paid editor working on a separate event/album article for Orinacom, about their ecology efforts Solutions for Dreamers, so I may have a COI here and don't want to make any direct edits that might be contentious.009o9 (talk) 08:04, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
Jack Johnson (born May 18, 1975) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, actor, record producer, and a former professional surfer. Johnson is known primarily for his work in the soft rock and acoustic genres. In 2001, he achieved commercial success after the release of his debut album, Brushfire Fairytales. Johnson has hit the Billboard 200, #1 chart, for the albums: Curious George (Soundtrack) in 2006, Sleep Through The Static in 2008, To the Sea in 2010, and From Here to Now to You in 2013 - 2014. Johnson's, In Between Dreams album, peaked at #2 in 2005 and again in 2013, on the Billboard 200.[1]
Johnson is active in the ecology and sustainability movement, often with an ocean-centric focus. Johnson and wife Kim created the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation and the Kōkua Hawaii Foundation. He is often the headlining act at eco-friendly music festivals and has been known to sit-in at events when his schedule would not allow a formal commitment.[2] In 2008, Johnson adopted the concept of greening (reduce and reuse) and donated 100% of the proceeds of the 2008, Sleep Through the Static tour to the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation and similarly, the proceeds from the 2010 tour for the, To The Sea album went to, All At Once, a Johnson backed collaborative of greening charities promoting fan involvement.[3][4][5]

Yea, all the buses are on biodiesel. We're doing this new community - I don't know what you'd call it. It's connected to our website and called "All At Once," which is a song on the album. At every show on this tour, we'll have a collection of booths called The Village Green. The idea is really from Zach Gill's wife and my wife, they're really working on it. They're reaching out to nonprofits in every town, and we're having them at our shows{{cite news}}

Proposed merge with Jack Johnson: 2017 Tour
[edit]Could be added to career section 2013-present, and be used to go into more detail on set list, etc. Tdts5 (talk) 19:22, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
But all of the dates are listed clearly with the opening acts, and you cannot describe that on the jack johnson page — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thearticlehelper101 (talk • contribs) 21:18, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, but in this article the tour is well described, we don't need to know every single place he plays, the references are for that. My proposal is that we could take the background and set list sections from the tour article and add into this one. Tdts5 (talk) 21:24, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
- Yes but it wouldn't look good, and/or work on the Jack Johnson page.... We can't just add the setlist onto his page... It would look Weird!!! Bigpickleman9999912 (talk) 21:24, 19 August 2017 (UTC)
- Plus, Jack Johnson's From Here to Now to You Tour, and To the Sea World Tour both have pages and this one wouls supplement it greatly... Bigpickleman9999912 (talk) 21:24, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose - I'm with Pickleman on this one. Paintspot Infez (talk) 21:49, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
