Edits to JBG SMITH - Section 1.13

[edit]

Hello -- For full disclosure, I work for a public relations firm and JBG SMITH is my client. I noticed that the last section of the article is missing quite a bit of information. I took a stab at rewriting a draft, but I would be grateful if someone reviewed and published:

In July 2017, The JBG Companies and Charles E. Smith, Vornado Realty Trust’s Washington business, merged to create JBG SMITH.

Vornado’s Washington portfolio, now part of JBG SMITH, grew through the acquisition of local developer Charles E. Smith’s empire, in 2002 [1]. At the time, Charles E. Smith’s portfolio included 14 million square feet of space spred across 50 buildings throughout the Washington, DC region. Vornado purchased Smith’s full and partially-owned Crystal City assets, totaling 7.2 million square feet [2].

Prior to the merger, Charles E. Smith spun-off Vornado, allowing the newly created company, JBG SMITH, to be a publicly traded real estate investment trust [3]. This spinoff allowed Vornado’s portfolio to focus purely on their New York properties, known in the industry as a pure-play, and allowed JBG SMITH’s portfolio to focus purely on their Washington properties [4].

Charles E. Smith’s former president Mitchell Schear is JBG SMITH’s consultant and a member of its board of trustees [5]. Additionally, Vornado CEO Steven Roth is the chairman of the board of JBG SMITH [6].
