changes to occupation
[edit]@Zarcademan123456:, the changes introduced are both OR and go against the reliable sources cited. Your OR is that the US is a notable exception, and the sources continue to say that the international community considers the territory occupied. Beyond that, further changes of which called on Israel to withdraw from territories occupied in the war in exchange for the termination of all states of belligerency and recognition of Israel as a sovereign state by the Arab states. to say captured goes against the clear language of the resolution and the sources (Withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict). I will be reverting your changes, and ask that you seek consensus for changes once challenged. nableezy - 00:03, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

The opening paragraph states "The international community recognizes the Golan Heights to be official Syrian territory and widely rejects Israeli military occupation". The Heights, however, aren't under military occupation since 1981, they are subject to Israeli civilian law no different from Israel's pre-1967 territory. The word military should be deleted, or the entire phrase changed to "annexation" or the such. Gsueso2 (talk) 15:29, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

What matters is Israel exercises effective military control over territory within the sovereign state of Syria. nableezy - 16:03, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
- Is there control which is not military, by that definition? --Gsueso2 (talk) 00:36, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- Military occupation and belligerent occupation, synonyms, means that the foreign power exercises effective military control by the foreign power. Israel exercises effective military control over the Golan Heights. It does not mean there is martial law applied there. nableezy - 00:40, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

[edit]The international community UNANIMOUSLY considers the Golan Heights as Syrian territory which has been illegally occupied by the IDF.
its not "widely" considered. every single UN member state, with the exception of the USA believe this territory to be occupied Syrian Territory. All these states demand that israel relinquish the land and return it to Syria and they consider it an illegal occupation of Syrian territory. 37.39.205.138 (talk) 08:31, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
- See if we can find some sourcing for this, I am inclined to agree in general. The US position is odd, since they are still signed on to a UN resolution stipulating occupation. Selfstudier (talk) 10:52, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hard to find sourcing that says anything other than "most" eg AP or BBC and I guess most ~= widely. Perhaps there are sources saying recognized only by the US or something like that.
- As an aside, the recent renewal of the UNIFIL mandate, signed off on by the US, refers to "the occupied Shab’a Farms". Selfstudier (talk) 14:17, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
- Where's the source for this claim? Even a compilation of sources?
- Without sources this is simply a claim, and one that seems extreme. I cannot, for instance, find after short search any indication of Ukraine's position on the Heights, and suspect that unless there is a UN record of a vote, there are other nations with no or an ambiguous position.
- As well I would note that a previously expressed position is not necessarily the official position of current governments, and language should reflect that. KenThomas (talk) 05:52, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
