Other forms of the name

[edit]

Don't really belong in the article, but worth mentioning here to help find references. Italian: l'isola delle pietre preziose (ǵazîrat al-ǵawâhir); l'isola dei Giacinti (ǵazîrat al-yâqût). — LlywelynII 23:49, 31 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Coördinates

[edit]
This really has almost nothing to do with what he was talking about.

For the curious, 2°N 173°E / 2°N 173°E / 2; 173 would roughly site this island at Charlotte Island in the Gilberts (Kiribati) if it were in any way equivalent to the modern system. It's not, though, and we shouldn't give a {{coord}} template for it without some source that goes through the trouble of explicitly adjusting al-Khwārizmī's prime meridian, circumference of the earth, units, and degree length to their modern equivalents. — LlywelynII 00:19, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sri Lanka

[edit]

is given separately, although this could simply be a phantom duplication along with/instead of a first go at Formosa, Java, &c. This Italian source records "Huen-tsang" (Xuanzang)'s report that "Seilan" (Ceylon) used to be known as "Ratnadvipa", which he glossed as "island of jewels". — LlywelynII 00:43, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations

[edit]

Congratulations on making it to today's listing on the "Did You Know..." section of Wikipedia Main Page. The process of making it the listing takes a bit of effort and involves the quick cooperation of many editors. All involved deserve recognition, appreciation, thanks and applause.

Best Regards,
