The SFGate reference states, "Anderson, 70, says she is the first African American woman to be elected mayor of a major California city, although a researcher at the California League of Cities said there were no records to confirm or refute that claim." In the 2010 census, Compton had population 96,000 and Richmond had population 103,000. According to the Compton, California article, "[I]n 1973, Doris A. Davis defeated Dollarhide's bid for re-election to become the first African-American female mayor of a metropolitan city in the United States." This begs the question, how big is a "major" city.
