19th century party and 21st century 'group'
[edit]This article is about the late 19th/early 20th century political party called the Irish Unionist Alliance. There is a group (founded c.2006) of unknown size also using the name Irish Unionist Alliance. They have a website here: [1]. This article has nothing to do with them. Snappy56 (talk) 15:08, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- An article was previously created on that "group" and discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Irish Unionist Alliance. During that discussion several people, including myself, looked for any sources to indicate that this "group" contains any more than one person with a web site, but we failed to find any. Phil Bridger (talk) 17:44, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
- That's fair enough. I just wanted to mention it on the talk page, to avoid any confusion in future. Snappy56 (talk) 18:15, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Contradiction ?
[edit]The article states that "The party lost its reason to exist following the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922" having earlier stated that "As late as 1929 there was a Unionist majority on Rathmines district council" A pretty impressive achievement for a party which had lost its reason to exist ???? 86.112.51.161 (talk) 19:38, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, but the difference was between national and local politics. There are larger contradictions in Irish politics today.86.42.202.113 (talk) 08:25, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
POV
[edit]Some of the language is rather POV and extreme, for instance the statement that "Southern Unionists are regarded as having been considerably less confrontational than their Ulster neighbours...As a group, they never threatened or organised violence in order to resist Home Rule or partition, and were generally placid in their politics".Royalcourtier (talk) 01:12, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
- That statement is taken from Alan O'Day's comparison of Southern Unionists to those in Ulster, but I agree that the language is still quite POV. In Reactions to Irish Nationalism, 1865-1914, O'Day says, "They [southern Unionist] never threatened to resit home rule by armed force, or even to do violence to nationalist politicians" and Lord Midleton is recorded in the same source as complaining about how they "restricted themselves to the easy task of attending meetings in Dublin and voting strong resolutions". Perhaps it should be qualified by saying something like 'O'Day has argued that... etc'? WatermillockCommon (talk) 21:57, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
