name, possible redirect

[edit]

The most direct, serious indication of a name i could find was Iran Petroleum Exchange in April 2005 - see reference 3 - Stella Harrington.

However, in January 2006 - reference 4 - Chris Cook, Asia Times - made no mention of a specific name.

Bourse can be translated as Exchange in English and is the same name as exchanges in various countries: Borse in Germany, Borsa in Italy, Beurs in Dutch and Bolsa in Spain. The term Bourse is thus more international than the English-only Exchange translation. Being more appropriate, it was picked for the Iran Oil Bourse which prides itself in its international orientation and acceptance of various currencies.

See http://62.193.31.6/enews.asp?id=10 - an official on Kish uses the term Kish International Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Bourse - so whether or not there is French influence, the meme of using the word Bourse in English is used (well, has been used at least once) by the Iranians (well, by at least one Iranian) responsible for the project. Links, Gold, Blogs, Oil & Blood

[edit]

I have tried bringing a bit of order into the link section. It still needs trimming. There seems to be a lot of cross-referencing between articles on this topic, and you can't really pinpoint where some of the facts/rumours come from. It is interesting that some people writing about the alleged creation of the IOB are in the gold business (see for example gold-eagle.com). I'm not making accusations, but obviously these are the people who would like to make the dollar appear as a risk. Perhaps somebody can help judging the merits of the many linked articles... --stw 19:26, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See Talk:Petroeuro#sorting_out_the_sources - the huge set of external links on Iranian Oil Bourse looks similar to that on petroeuro - or at least, it did look similar a few weeks ago. My suggestion is making specific links in the text (citations) to the reference which justifies/claims the statement, but doing it in a way in which you can put several citations to the same reference, since a single reference may justify (support) several different, useful claims. i think that some overlap, i.e. links listed both on petroeuro and here, is reasonable, but simply listing all of them is probably not reasonable... Anyway, congratulations for any useful work done in improving this... :) Boud 01:16, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

March 20 date unrealistic IMHO

[edit]

IMHO it's unrealistic that the exchange will really open on March 20 2006, for the following reasons:

  • the threats to attack to Iran with either nuclear or non-nuclear bombs, and to invade and take over Khuzestan where (apparently) 90% of the oil lies, can hardly be ignored; and
  • Chris Cook's January statement (In January 2006, Chris Cook of the Wimpole Consortium referred to delays in the process due to the election to the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and subsequent difficulty of appointing a new oil minister acceptable both to the president and parliament[4]); and
  • the probability that institutions/organisations will be worried about risking their purchases/sales in an exchange if there's a risk of Iran being hit with either a hot war or economic sanctions;
  • as of March 13, 2006, the Kish Free Zone public relations office hasn't made any public announcements: http://www.kish.ir/ except for:
    • Kish Free Zone Stock Exchange Trading Floor opened, May 2005: http://www.kish.ir/open.asp?l=&r=&q=kfzoonlinenews&p=board/3514764.htm
    • Vice-president of Kish Free Zone Organization Declared: Emphasis on Launching Oil Bourse in Kish, Press Release Date: 25.December.2005 http://62.193.31.6/enews.asp?id=10 He added: After establishment of Kish Stock Exchange and start-up activities of branches of foreign banks in Kish, establishment of Kish International Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Bourse is of major importance and its start-up will lead to vast transitions in the national economy arena and its stronger linkage to the global economy. - which means that Kish Stock Exchange and branches of foreign banks have already started in Kish (see other Kish info), while Kish International Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Bourse is planned as the next step and is a Very Good Thing.

So if you're reading this close to (or after) March 20 and there is no sign of the IOB or KIOGPB will (or did) open on March 20, then some rewording of the dates will be necessary, e.g. had been announced to open on March 20 2006 etc. BTW, it seems like March 20, 2006 is the Persian New Year - so maybe it's more like saying "in the new year starting March 20 2006 rather than literally March 20..."? followup to deletion discussion

[edit]
What I consider important (and very dangerous) is that some people call this proposal "a pretty valid reason for the U.S. to attack Iran." No vote. Barno 04:26, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

IMHO the person saying this was not justifying the attack, s/he was just saying that it's a more credible reason for the attack. Boud 18:55, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nobody suggested anything except to not delete the article immediately, so I'll ask again.

There's no indication that anything will become of this "bourse". Given that, the only other thing I can think of to do with this article would be to merge it to "planned exchanges that never happened". The question is, should it be deleted now or given more time (or merged)? Bob A 17:31, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User Bob seems to be fighting the war on Iran in the Wikipedia front. The Oil Bourse idea is the económic equivalent of a nuclear bomb. Have to get rid of the idea (weapon) at any cost.-tequendamia 22:20, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Tequendamia, I have no political agenda as a wikipedian. In fact, I think you've misguessed my philosophy. Please stop talking about the Iran war. Bob A 00:56, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Iran war? What Iran war? We have no Iran war here! An article about a failing kickoff to an as yet non-existant oil exchange in a country that stones christians, legally justifies honor rapes, and publiclly vows the destruction of israel, yes but no Iran war.--mitrebox 23:53, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
User Tequendamia seems to know but deny the facts in the following article: http://www.studien-von-zeitfragen.net/Zeitfragen/__Collapse_in_Iran/__collapse_in_iran.html
Why?

Is it opened in September ?

[edit]

The article says that "In July 2006, a building has been purchased and the projected opening date is September 2006.". So is that bourse opened in September ? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by BlueEyedCat (talkcontribs) 13:41, 3 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Two different issues

[edit]
  1. Iran announced a bourse, but failed to open it. No surprise there - Kish is unlikely to particularly attractive to international traders (which is why West Texas Intermediate is traded in New York rather than Texas).
  2. Iran is demanding payment for its oil in non-US$ currencies. This is not particularly relevant to the bourse, but is more an issue of tightening US sanctions against Iran, making it risky for Iran to hold dollars and for international banks to deal with Iran in dollars (plus some propaganda points).

The first should be the focus of this article. --Rumping (talk) 00:16, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the undersea cable cut in this article? It's purely speculative at this point that the cable damage is related to this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.83.219.177 (talk) 19:19, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

what's the name?

[edit]

Since the exchange is expected to be international, it will presumably have to have a formal name in English (and Mandarin?), rather than just various translations of an official persian language name. If it really will be announced tomorrow 11 Feb 2008 as announced by Danesh-Jafari, then we'll know pretty soon. In any case, we have two fairly recent documents coming directly from Iranian sources relatively close to the project, so i've referenced them in the first sentence following the names they give (even though there's no direct quote of what Danesh-Jafari calls the insitution - my guess is that the people preparing the article are not sure themselves, since they had to translate from persian to english). [edit]

I can se no reason why this particular article should be removed so i removed the deletion tag. If I'm missing some obvious reason, feel free to leave a message on my talk page. Addicted2Sanity (talk) 09:02, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

reference to ria novosti erroneous date (27 feb) shifted to talk page

[edit]

i removed the following from the timeline because it seems quite clearly to have the wrong date. Boud (talk) 15:13, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On February 27 2008, the opening ceremony of Iranian Oil Bourse will be held, according to the Oil Minister, Gholam Hossein Nozari in an interview with Iran's Press TV satellite channel. He said that that all financial settlements will be made in Iran's national currency, the rial[1]

(Just signing here to make it clearer that that is a quote, not an anonymous comment.) Boud (talk) 16:04, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

russian and western media sloppy about details?

[edit]

Not only does the ria novosti article (previous section) have a wrong date (27 instead of 17), but now there's an Associated Press article which converted "two thousand and 200 tonnes in 100 tonne cases" from the KFZO report into "100 tons". That's a 95% underestimate due to sloppy reading... It's good that different Iranian sources publish in English and have the internet, or else we'd have to rely only on n-th hand sources which misquote what someone said that someone said that someone said... The oil bomb

[edit]

Is there any truth to this? I've only seen this mentioned once:

Cancelled?

[edit]

User:Imeeng recently blanked the article and added a source saying the bourse has been cancelled. I reverted the blanking, but updating the article accordingly. More information from someone who's well-informed about the subject would be appreciated; as at present the article appears to somewhat contradict itself about whether the bourse ever opened or not. Robofish (talk) 15:59, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

SOMEONE needs to get a hold of this, put in real, verifiable data and then get it protected because the way it currently stands, it is not possible from reading the article to ascertain whether this market ever fully opened for trading or was just something of a pilot project which would up being defunded by the Majilis. 75.245.170.128 (talk) 03:20, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
