Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on August 31, 2018.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that a 156-foot (48 m) tunnel for the Lower Manhattan Expressway was built in New York City in the 1960s, but was never used?
Current status: Good article

Mileage

[edit]

NYSDOT and FHWA show a length of 0.5 mi. This doesn't make sense; that's less the distance from the state line to the east portal of the tunnel. The NYSDOT traffic counts also show that mile 0.5 is at "ACC RT 478I"; 0.5 miles is where the tunnel passes under NY 9A, but makes absolutely no sense as an actualy mileage figure. Thus I went with 1.1 miles, the distance from the state line to exit 5 from the tunnel. If you think this is too precise, we can go with 1 mile; the westbound length is 0.9 miles. --NE2 02:27, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I will go with 1 mile. --NE2 02:46, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Robert Moses?

[edit]

I may be wrong, and please tell me if I am, but arent many of the cancelled highways mentioned in this article designed/pushed by Robert Moses, one of the most important men in the history of highways in NYC (and possibly the most important person in regards to highway construction since Roman times in my opinion). How can he not be mentioned?Camelbinky (talk) 00:12, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll answer my own question now that I've looked into it on my own. Yes, Moses was involved in the cancelled highways and those were at the end of his career and part of the reason the public turned on him and his career was cut short (not soon enough for some people though). I will be adding info on him to the article to clarify and allow his article to be linked from here. I find it a shame and a great oversight such a man was overlooked when info was being put into the article.Camelbinky (talk) 23:39, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Second that point. R. Moses, regardless of one's personal feeling about him, must b mentioned in this article.Dogru144 (talk) 00:55, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • "I-278, the only I-78 spur to leave New York City, has a western terminus on Linden, New Jersey, and passes northward and eastward through all five boroughs, with its eastern end at the Bruckner Interchange in the Bronx." Source? Especially for entering all five boroughs.
    • I added this FHWA source for I-278 being the only actual inter-state Interstate 78 spur. The others (478, 678, 878) are also described in this source as being exclusively in NYC.
  • Calling the airport Kennedy when talking about the 1950's strikes me as an anachronism.
  • "Opposition also formed over the fact that the highway would create a "Chinese wall" separating the neighborhoods of Lower Manhattan." I can't read the source, does it actually use the term "Chinese wall"?
    • Yeah. The source said The Moses expressway was fought bitterly, with its opponents asserting that it would become a Chinese wall stretching across Lower Manhattan... epicgenius (talk) 23:11, 20 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Have to go out now, so intermediate save and I'll finish when I get home. Courcelles (talk) 16:50, 20 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • "The low bid of $1,017,585" Should likely inflate this into modern dollars.
    • Done.
  • " the Bushwick route was opposed due to the necessary destruction of residences and businesses in Brooklyn in Queens" Brooklyn and Queens, perhaps?
    • Fixed.
  • Got some shouting in the referencing.
    • Fixed.
  • Images all seem to be licensed correctly.
  • Article is stable and neutral.

@Courcelles: Thank you for doing this review so quickly. I have addressed all the issues you have pointed out. epicgenius (talk) 23:11, 20 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
NB: This article passes, but the paperwork is downright difficult on an Ipad. Will do when I see a real desktop. Courcelles (talk) 16:08, 21 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
