Restaurants
[edit]It seems to me that I remember the Negresco having another more family oriented restaurant with a sort of merry-go-round theme. I'm just not certain enough to insert it without additional confirmation. Well, I'll be in the area June and July, so I may get a chance... Dick Kimball 16:10, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
- Yup, My wife and I had dinner at the Negresco's gastronomic Chanticleer dining room in 2008 and it's in the southwest corner of the seaward side of the hotel, decorated with merry-go-round horses. I suspect, without much evidence, that the hotel staff steers families with kids to that one in order to keep their dining room child-free for serious gourmets; at least it was child-free when we ate there. Details
[edit]This is verbatim from the April/May 2012 Riviera Reporter magazine:
- Le Negresco was built in 1912 by Henri Negrescu, the son of a Romanian innkeeper. Negresco (as he became later known as a French citizen) arrived in Monte Carlo in 1893 and worked in hospitality, eventually managing the restaurant at the Municipal Casino in Nice in 1905 when he met architect Edouard Niermans, to whom Negresco entrusted his dream hotel; Alexandre Darracq financed the project and Gustave Eiffel was brought on board to design the glass dome, still as visibly glorious 100 years later in the Salon Royal. Édouard-Jean Niermans
[edit]I have one guidebook to the South of France (French Entrée #10) that indicates: "It was designed by the architect who designed the Moulin Rouge and the Follies Bergère." Dick Kimball (talk) 19:13, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
- The French Wikipedia entry on Édouard-Jean Niermans concurs and adds other notable commissions including the Casino de Paris and apparently the conversion of the Villa Eugenie in Biarritz into a 5-star luxury hotel. Dick Kimball (talk) 19:13, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
