Expansion

I have added some content, links to Wiki pages, some citations and external links. I am a new Wiki contributor, a new member of ProjectEquine and a long-time horse enthusiast and only want to contribute in a meaningful way. I'm going to seek some more robust materials as I find myself wanting to add certain things that I don't have a source for at the moment. Sorry to revert all your work, but this is an article about the job, not the famous people who do the job. I kept the history section, with a bit of a rewrite. I am glad to see a new contributor, but be aware that we try to separate the pop culture stuff out (see WP:TRIVIA) and trying to generate any kind of list of "famous trainers" here would be a political nightmare. We have Category:Horse trainers for listing people who are notable in the field. We have a list of race horse trainers already, and I see no reason a list of fictitious horse trainers could not be created as a separate article. Yes, it does tend to get out of control when somebody adds the pop culture sections, and I don't think we could ever hope to list every notable horse trainer in real life even. Generally, what we need here is a history overview starting with the earliest possible record of horse training and continuing through history to the present day. (The editors from other countries also tend to get mad if we focus on the United States.) This is just sort of an overview article, if that makes sense. We have separate articles for natural horsemanship and most of the disciplines. I'll be willing to help expand here, after a Good article review I'm in now is over with. Hi Ladies. Thanks for the tips. I may have gotten overzealous in adding "in media." Thanks for noting WP:TRIVIA As context, I saw the Guidance section: "Media coverage of a topic is generally encyclopedic information, helps establish the topic's notability, and helps readers understand the subject's influence on the public (and often vice versa)." I took that to mean including info of this nature in an article would be ok, although I see your point about overview articles.

There are no articles for Glenn or Buford Randall, and the Tom Smith (horse trainer) needs some work, so perhaps that content could be leveraged. I wanted to ask ProjectEquine if anyone agreed it would be good to create pages for the Randall's.

Moving forward, sections that seem reasonable to include (similar to other job articles) might be: education or training (depending on what materials can be found) skills, duties, equipment, certification. The Football player article has a section on 'lists of players.' Perhaps an overview article like this could like to other existing Wiki lists about different types of horse trainers, or horse trainers in different countries. I've seen an awards section in other job articles (although now I can't find one off-hand, so it's moot) so that seemed to be not trivial. Perhaps it belongs as a list outside the article; what do you think?

I'd like to hear your thoughts before spending more time on this article. I am interested in promoting this horse profession related article from a stub. However, since my goal is to contribute in a meaningful way, that means adding content that is likely to be kept. As senior editors and members of ProjectEquine, I welcome your thoughts. Thanks! Hi Curdigirl. I think that working on Smith's article is a great idea and so is an article on the Randalls (separately or as a family -- many good sources on Glenn Randall Sr, Glenn Jr. " J.R" and Buford "Corky" Randall)! Biographies are often a good way to get into writing wikipedia articles because the sources, even if a lot of them, are more focuses; sometimes these "general overview" articles like this one here are among the toughest to write, actually. Horse training is particularly difficult because there are so many different styles and schools, and other than for horse racing, there is no licensing or credentialing required in North America (some other nations might have requirements). There are also, quite literally, hundreds if not thousands of trainer awards; it would probably be impossible to figure out all of them. We do have lists on top of lists, and certainly can put a list article at a "see also" section. In fact, I think we have a List of race horse trainers out there, which is easier to do because those folks have to be licensed, thus making it easier to evaluate notability. I agree that the Randalls probably deserve articles. Yes, List of... articles are great, mainly because they give you ideas for what to do next. I agree that the lack of licensing required might make it tougher. (Personally, the best trainers I've met were unlicensed, and some of the worst were licensed, so I'm not a fan of licensing for non-racing people...) Adding New Sections

I would like to add a few more sections about the occupation of horse trainers such as what qualifications/education they need and what their salary is. A couple of sources that I have found helpful are from the BlS and work.chron.com.
