Error
[edit]Please note that the self-portrait from the Hermitage exhibited on this page is dated to the "mid-eighteenth century" and therefore cannot be attributed to Horace Vernet (born 1789). It is likely by Carle Vernet, Horace's father, or another member of this prolific 'dynasty' of French painters.68.170.78.91 18:43, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
The focus on the Pont d'Arcole painting (1826) is misleading. It was certainly not his most well known painting.
Agreed. It was hardly his most famous painting, although it was well known through reproductive prints. I removed this text from the entry: "and arguably his most famous work of art was the Battle of the Bridge of Arcole, which he painted in 1826. That piece depicted young Napoleon leading his troops across a bridge with a tattered flag. The actual battle, Battle of the Bridge of Arcole (Le Bataille du Pont d'Arcole in French), occurred in 1796."
I will be adding more updates to this page about Vernet's work during the July Monarchy.
