Reasons for undoing the revision of 5 September 2013 by user Akseli9

[edit]

I undid the revision of 5 September 2013 by user Akseli9 because of the following reasons:

- The revision consisted in large parts of original research.

- There were logical and content-related issues. A motocross track has little to do with the Paris-Dakar rally. Imho the actual reason Honda chose to present the XLV on a motocross track in 1983 was that this location was used to present not only the XLV, but the whole new 1983 range of Honda off-road motorcycles, including motocross bikes and ATVs. Still it is imho hard to understand why the XLV was included in this presentation, because the motocross track was a location where the XLV could only fail (especially compared to the lighter bikes presented along its side).

- the information about the BMW R80G/S is unnecessary for the article about the XLV750R

- the clause referring to the R80G/S as "the only other big tourer existing at the time" is incorrect - of course there were other "big tourers" at the time. An addition like "the only other big dual-purpose tourer" would correct the clause; but as I wrote above, the info about the R80G/S is unneccessary altogether.

These big dual-purpose bikes became so popular largely thanks to the Paris-Dakar Rally. My words most probably needed some corrections, but ignoring altogether the entire Paris-Dakar marketing phenomenon, was a mistake that I tried to fix. Just because I mistook the term "tourer" instead of "dual-purpose" (anyway at the times we were talking only about "trail bikes"), doesn't justify the entire disappearance of all the info I wrote. Your text places the Honda XLV750 as just a nonsense. It reflects only a German point of view of these times, ignoring the Italian and French markets which were at least as big as the German market with its BMW, and in which many different models of big trail bikes could be developped, after the BMW R80GS. There is more to say about this machine, than keeping saying it was just a nonsense presenting it on a motocross track.

Hi Akseli9,
I can understand that you are upset about the undoing of your revision. I agree that there is much, much more to say about the XLV. I just didn't think that pressing those infos into the existing text was an elegant solution. Maybe adding a new section to the article about the historical context and the Paris-Dakar marketing phenomenon, entitled e.g. "The Paris-Dakar marketing phenomenon and the XLV750R" would be good. This section could also contain information about the BMW R80G/S - in case it is directly related to the XLV750R. If you like, we could try to write such a section together.
Cheers,
a fellow XLV750R-enthusiast
