The presence of small turtles in the Hoan Kiem is well documented.

The videos only show the head of a turtle, with only shiny water... it looks too much like a close up of a turtle head.

I should think the most obvious appearance of a giant turtle would be the huge shell ,the head is tiny compared to its shell. It would darken the water and have a big blob appearance. The adult giant turtle wont 'stand upright' to breath, only the babies do that

Sort the status species here

[edit]

I feel that as is obvious from both pages we should visit again the issue of this as a taxon. The IUCN Checklist we tend to follow does not recognise this as a species and discussed it in their 2011 edition: page 219. As has been mentioned in previous discussions Yangtze giant softshell turtle talk page by @SunCreator and @Obsidian Soul there is merit in keeping a page here, but it should not be a species page. I think the taxobox can be removed and make this a page about an historically significant animal. Whether the Vietnamise describer of the species believes it or not, subsequent research has refuted the claims that they are distinct. This has been followed by subsequent revisers and is still followed by the most recent edition of the IUCN Checklist (2014). This is how taxonomy works. This is a junior subjective synonym. Lead sentence

The Hoàn Kiếm turtle is not taxon. It is a turtle. The topic of biologists infighting about lumping verses splitting taxa deserves it's own article, but does not belong in the lead of this article. Michael J Swassing (talk) 22:59, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
