content ideas

[edit]

This is an ambitious, wide-ranging topic; some food for thought:

  • FDR's progressive VP, Henry Wallace
  • powerful opposition: Kochs/ALEC, US Chamber of Commerce, Roger Ailes/Fox News
  • progressive new/digital media - radio, TV, blogs, podcasts, YouTubers: Air America, Current TV, Free Speech TV, Democracy Now!, Thom Hartmann, Young Turks, Humanist Report, Secular Talk, Majority Report, et al.
  • fight for progressive voice/presence on liberal media - CNN, MSNBC
  • Sanders Institute, Progressive International
  • 2016 elections
    • fake populist Trump/lies
    • progressives mostly on defense for next 4 years
  • 2018 elections: AOC, The Squad, Knock Down the House documentary
  • 2019 Squad inaugurations among federal shutdown
  • 2020: COVID-19
    • push for social justice among nationwide health and economic crises
    • billionaires getting richer while regular people struggle
  • BLM 2020
    • BLM reignites due to police shootings, subsequent racial unrest - even among COVID
    • conversation expands to justice for native people, transgender, disabilities
    • nationwide, and even worldwide, pushback against former slave traders, plantation owners; statutes removed, streets, buildings renamed
    • sports teams and products rebrand due to racist connotations
  • climate change/Green New Deal
    • renewable energy, electric transportation
    • Greta, Sunrise Movement, Extinction Rebellion
  • cannabis legislation: medical, recreational

Suggested merge

[edit]

I see that someone suggested a merge with History of the socialist movement in the United States but I am unable to find the discussion for it, so I'm giving my thoughts here. I belive the articles should be merged because they are completely different things. Socialism is a defined economic system, while left-wing politics is a general, variable, subjective, term for many, many, political ideas. Left-wing politics covers more issues than just economy (abortion, climate change, LGBTQIA+ rights, stronger federal government). This article doesn't really cover left-wing politics in general, just the socialist aspects. The article on left-wing politics in general does a much better job at this, while right now this article just doesn't cover those issues of left-wing poliitics. I fully support merging even though the articles should be covering different things, because they are not. βӪᑸᙥӴTalkContribs 01:11, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Missing Sections

[edit]

The current page is heavily focused on socialist and communist politics while ignoring many of the more successful (and thus now considered mainstream) left groups. It gives the impression that left-wing politics is very extreme and marginal. Here are some topics that are missing:

Including topics like these will give this page a more comprehensive and less slanted impression of left-wing politics. Oski91 (talk) 06:20, 30 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
