TLDR: Change citation 12 from "https://phrasee.co/the-history-of-youtube/" to "https://web.archive.org/web/20200925140821/https://phrasee.co/the-history-of-youtube/".

[12] points to a Phrasee article that has been removed, and now redirects to an unrelated "History of Email" article. There is an archive.org capture of the article from 25 Sep 2020 that could be used instead.

Is this due weight?

[edit]

" YouTube has faced criticism over aspects of its operations, including its handling of copyrighted content contained within uploaded videos,[3] its recommendation algorithms perpetuating videos that promote conspiracy theories and falsehoods,[4] hosting videos ostensibly targeting children but containing violent or sexually suggestive content involving popular characters,[5] videos of minors attracting pedophilic activities in their comment sections,[6] and fluctuating policies on the types of content that is eligible to be monetized with advertising.[3]"

Most of this is oddly specific. I would toss out this paragraph if I could. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 5.173.103.230 (talk) 17:41, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Me at the zoo" is technically not the first YouTube video

[edit]

There were several test videos of equipment and such that were released in February and March but deleted just before "Me at the zoo."

Should it be changed? xdude (talk) 00:52, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but can you provide some source for it? 134.215.190.243 (talk) 18:32, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As a reference: No, COM-TEST was NOT the first video on Youtube. (TheTekkitRealm exposed) by SuperflyMN. TheTekkitRealm who spread this myth manually edited a 2005 Wayback Machine capture. Elominius (talk) 20:45, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think you watched TheTekkitRealm's video, come on man he was lying the whole freakin time, and there many expose videos of him. Uvarajie (talk) 00:19, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Section move proposal

[edit]

I propose that section Creators be moved to YouTuber. These sections are more related to the topic of YouTuber than this page. I would also support some material remaining here if it is relevant to the history of YouTube and can be incorporated into the rest of the article. However, I think this section should mostly be moved to YouTuber. Alduin2000 (talk) 13:35, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

support This makes sense. The "creators" section is about YouTube content creators, which is what a YouTuber is. I think that the "history of YouTube" article should still link to the YouTuber article because there is no separation of the community and the platform, but as the community has its own article, content about the community goes there. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:03, 17 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Support Most of this article is related to YouTube's history as a company. With that in mind, some of the earlier material related to advertising and the Partner Program could be integrated elsewhere in the article, but I think that YouTuber is definitely a more relevant place for the rest of the section. Puhala,ny (talk) 03:32, 20 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Support I think that the section should be trimmed to being about YouTubers historical possibility of making money and not about individual YouTuber. Spannerjam (talk) 09:52, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Given that there is unanimous support for this so far and no new contributions have been made to the discussion for a couple of weeks, I'm going to move the content from this section to YouTuber, retaining and incorporating relevant information on this article as well. [edit]

On the table in the Internationalization section of this article, there are three missing countries (Venezuela, Papua New Guinea, and Bangladesh), even though I don't know the exact date of when they were added to YouTube. Bengali also needs to be removed from the list of languages that don't have their own country version on YouTube. ConnerMiner (talk) 19:12, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 11:33, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
True… I'll be more specific about what needs to be changed. In the Internationalization section, the Countries with YouTube Localization table should be changed to add these at the end:
 Venezuela Spanish ?
 Papua New Guinea English ?
 Bangladesh Bengali ? Last location
Right below this, the sentence "…including Amharic, Albanian, Armenian, Bengali, Burmese, Khmer, Kyrgyz, Laotian, Mongolian, Persian and Uzbek…" should be changed to remove Bengali. ConnerMiner (talk) 17:44, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

This edit request proposes a spelling & grammar change. Also this is a section on introducing/removing features, we don't need to begin with "YouTube introduced new features".

Please change page source:
Beginning January 2020, YouTube introduced new features. Video creators has to mark whether a video is made for kids or not. YouTube is comlying with the [[Children's Online Privacy Protection Act]].

to:
Beginning January 2020, video creators have to mark whether a video is made for kids or not, YouTube citing compliance with the [[Children's Online Privacy Protection Act]]. GoldSuit (talk) 13:56, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

How do people get the dates for the Internationalization section of the article, especially when there are no news articles explaining when YouTube launches a localized version of their site for another country? Because I noticed that many of the later countries, such as Costa Rica and Liechtenstein, have dates mentioned despite there being no announcements of them getting local versions of YouTube (at least as far as I'm aware). Also, Cambodia and Laos recently got local versions of YouTube, which I noticed yesterday, but again, no announcements marking the exact date. ConnerMiner (talk) 12:31, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Handles

[edit]

YouTube recently released something new: Handles!

A handle is like this: @username397

Soooooooooooo can we have information of that in this page (and the YouTube page too)? I can't do it by myself because I need to reach 10 edits in order to edit those pages as they are semi-protected.

Thanks! Sincerely, TheOfficialJJPM7984 (talk) 23:32, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

oh you know what screw it since everyone is ignoring me I would add information about it by myself since I got 10 edits now TheOfficialJJPM7984 (talk) 23:17, 26 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Reverted. This will need a reliable source, which I'm sure exist. InfiniteNexus (talk) 23:57, 26 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"YouTube allows users to upload videos, view them, rate them with likes and dislikes"

[edit]

YouTube removed the dislike function so are you gonna remove that? 105.103.246.165 (talk) 23:10, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube did not remove the dislike function. They removed the ability to see how many dislikes a video got, the button to "dislike" a video still exists and functions. InfiniteNexus (talk) 01:40, 6 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The player timeline history picture is... inaccurate

[edit]

The last entry on the image, "since 2015", is not the current design of the YouTube player. The modern one still looks similar to the one labelled "2013-2015". That last video player is from a very different website I'm not sure I can link here. I feel like a better image is needed. 73.75.228.117 (talk) 06:32, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's close enough, and I'm not sure why you think the 2013–2015 image looks closer to the current design. InfiniteNexus (talk) 19:10, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I got caught by one of Google's experiments, because I would swear the version I saw was different than what is displayed here. In any case it appears I was in error and you are correct. 73.75.228.117 (talk) 02:56, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is a notice that the players might have gone through undocumented iterations. Examples of such are the gear icon of the menu and the colour of the volume slider. Elominius (talk) 20:40, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New source with an estimate for growth over time, etc.

[edit]

There's a new paper in the Journal of Quantitative Description: Digital Media that tries to answer basic statistical questions about YouTube by generating and analyzing a large random sample. I think some of it might be useful on this page, especially e.g. the site's estimated growth over time (I already shared it on the main YouTube article talk, where it's probably most relevant).

I have a COI, which is why I'm putting it here instead of adding it myself, but it seems like a useful addition to the article.

Oh, and while the journal, which is open access, is licensed CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, I'm pretty confident there wouldn't be an issue getting any of the figures uploaded to Commons with a compatible license if requested. Cheers. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 16:05, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Citation for claim on tagline being dropped

[edit]

On October 25, 2012, The YouTube slogan (Broadcast Yourself) was taken down due to the live stream of the U.S. presidential debate.

Where is the citation or any further elaboration to this claim that YT dropping its tagline was "due to" the presidential debate?

Could you update this picture to late 2024, since this one is outdated, due to the fact that YouTube changed the progress bar to magenta and this video-sharing site underwent rebranding in 2024? Thanks already. This article has not been updated regularly. 205.155.225.253 (talk) 18:01, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
