A fact from History of Kodaikanal appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 27 October 2008, and was viewed approximately 2,047 times (disclaimer) (check views). The text of the entry was as follows:

Frumpy Opening Statement
[edit]Any article about object X ought to start by stating, "Object X is a ________ located at _______. It was established in ______ as a ________ to combat ________ (problem XYZ)." THEN get rhapsodic about the various advantages and merits. Most of us don't even know what a Kodiakanal is. It just needs a link at the top: "see main article on Kodiakanal"
- You're right. I made the changes you suggested. Marcus (talk) 04:05, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Earliest Reference to Kodaikanal
[edit]Why should the mention of Kurinji in Sangam literature specifically refer to Kodaikanal, if the flower was abundant in all of the Western Ghats and the Nilgiris are even named about them? --Wuselig (talk) 20:18, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- Good point. the connection I'm making is: Kurinji Flower-> Sangam_landscape#Kurinji_.E2.80.93_Mountainous_Region -> Valli -> Creepers -> Kodaikanal#Etymology. Needs improvement. Read the links. May be better explained already in Kodaikanal#Etymology. I'm seeking more references to better support this. Marcus (talk) 21:32, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
Careful: That sounds likeWP:NOR. --Wuselig (talk) 23:27, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
Old Images
[edit]I am in posession of "The South Indian Railway Illustrated Guide", printed Madras 1913. The following photographers contributed to that book:
- Wiele & Klein, Madras [1]; [2]; [3]; unfortunatly not usable, since Klein died in the 1940's
- Nicholas & Co, Madras [4] year of death not known
- W.A. Cross
- A.D.G. Shelley
- J.A.D. Lloyd with a Bird's Eye View, Kodaikanal (The classical Lake - Perumal View)and Pillar Rocks
- Charley Brown, Madras
Do you have some information on the bios of these photographers? --Wuselig (talk) 23:27, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
I just saw the old images you uploaded and the PD-India tag that is available. Well that means that these images published in 1913 are Public Domain and I heated up my scanner already. Could you please upload to Commons from the start. Moving to Commons later on is posasible, but if the license is compatible with Commons in the first place an unnececery hazzle. --Wuselig (talk) 09:32, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Literature on Kodaikanal
[edit]Charlotte Chandler Wykoff: Kodaikanal Gift of the Forest. I have a condensed and edited version by Dorothy Lockwood published by the Christian Literature Society, First edition 1964, reprinted 1969 and 1970 if youare interested I'll copy it and send it to you per email.
Sample correction to your text: "By June 1845 two shacks were ready, at the edge of the kanal ... (Near the spot today stand 'Sunnyside' and 'Shelton'.)" , i.e. not Sunnyside and Shelton were erected in 1845. --Wuselig (talk) 23:27, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- Wuselig, Thanks for the ref and offer to copy. I may find a copy here of the originial:
[1] (is ISBN correct?) or [2] Please give a page # to [3] and I'll add your correction, or you can do it Marcus (talk) 02:20, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

- I am only in possession of the small booklet, it has no ISBN. As for the other I don't know. I'll make the extension to the article sometime today. --Wuselig (talk) 09:39, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- I cross checked with "Nora Mitchell: The Indian Hill Station"- your primary source - and she supports the current version. PhD-thesis vs. Tourist-booklet, I would say thesis wins.;-)
- But another comment: I hold this to be a copyright violation of the original photograph. So therefore the GNU-license is wrong and cropping the image makes the violation worse. And I am afraid this image will also not hold up to scrutiny, unless the photographer died less than ten years after taking the picture, and I believe for anonymous work it would have to be pre 1923. Appart from all that, I think you are doing a great job, and I wish to help with some constructive criticism. I don't want to interfere with mayor changes until you are done. --Wuselig (talk) 22:39, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Mirror Image
[edit]I was irritated by the old image of Kodai Lake. Then I horizontally mirrored it and I think now it could fit. If you imagine the photographer standing near present day Bryant Park and looking WestNorthWest the Buildings shown could indeed be located at the present day Kodai School.

Image copyright problem with File:Paliyan extended family.jpg
[edit]The image File:Paliyan extended family.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
- That this article is linked to from the image description page.
