Trying to clarify when an individual voter can discover how their vote was ultimately distributed
[edit]For the individual voter to be able to discover how their vote was distributed depends on two things: the system needs to have been deterministic (I think the term "modern" may have been used to rule out systems using random choices when transfering surpluses), and sufficient information needs to be provided about the counting process. Complete vote data (as are available for the Scottish Council elections of 2012 and 2017) certainly allows this; but that's more than necessary: for those Council elections output files were produced describing how many votes were transferred and at what value at each stage, which provides the required info. For Meek STV, it is indeed simpler: all you need are the final keep values for each candidate. Dmollison (talk) 11:04, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
Merger proposal
[edit]I propose we merge History and use of the single transferable vote with History and use of instant-runoff voting. Technically speaking these systems are the same thing (with the IRV variant just being the STV when used to elect one person). Most of the countries listed use both at some level, and there is lots of overlap in the content that could be better covered in one article.
Any thoughts?

- Interesting, but under which name? Kahlores (talk) 08:03, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose, until and unless there is a consensus to merge Instant-runoff voting and Single transferable vote; consensus failed for that in the past (referred to in [[1]]). If there was a proposal to merge those, it should be from the main pages, not on the history pages. Klbrain (talk) 21:57, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
- A common history and of ranked-choice voting (or history and of preferential voting) is a possible alternative, but that would further the scope. the name STV covers IRV on some countries common usage (as STV by-elections are held by IRV if needed), but then the main pages should be combined by this logic as well, and that I would oppose as IRV definitely deserves its own article (otherwise FPTP and STNV would also be the same, and even FPTP and plurality voting are two seperate articles) Rankedchoicevoter (talk) 14:28, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Closing the merge proposal, given the uncontested objections with stale discussion. There also doesn't seem to be consensus or support for alternative models. Klbrain (talk) 09:45, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
Estonia

I've just discovered by happenstance that Estonia experienced one election under STV in 1990, something barely written anywhere on Wikipedia. So I've just added a section on it. I'm pinging users who included Template:User Pro Single Transferable Voting as a userbox, just in case some of you are academics working in the field, or more likely passionate about election methods and supporters of voting reform. Kahlores (talk) 08:03, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks. Pity they did not use it more often!--Bduke (talk) 08:20, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
