List of examples of notable historic houses
[edit]Since List of historic houses exists (which includes links to many country-specific lists), should we move the many examples of historic houses from this article to that page and provide a link in the "See also" section? Or shorten the list to a few of the most notable houses worldwide and link to the main list in that section? Ry's the Guy (talk|contribs) 09:46, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
- Yes I think so. It's way too heavy on examples. —МандичкаYO 😜 08:35, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
- List of historic houses is a list of list articles, so moving the content to that page would make it a mixed bag. If this were to be performed, it would be more accurate to move to list articles specifically by country. North America1000 01:27, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
- Yes that's what I was suggesting, I just didn't explain myself clearly. Ry's the Guy (talk|contribs) 02:49, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

merge with historic building?
[edit]I'm wondering if this should be moved to historic building (currently a redirect to List of heritage registers). I think its topic is too narrow for the source material - I'm trying to find sources on this and a lot is about historic house museums, which is already its own article. What do you think about a combination? —МандичкаYO 😜 13:12, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
- So are you suggesting merging Historic house museums and Historic house into Historic building? And moving the list of historic houses from this article to List of historic houses? I agree that the topics are very narrow. We should get feedback from members of WP:TAFI too. Ry's the Guy (talk|contribs) 14:15, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
- I was just thinking of merging historic house and historic building (as a house is a building). From my searches it seems like the historic house museums are sort of different enough that they merit a standalone article bc of the museum aspect and how they recreate historic periods etc. —МандичкаYO 😜 14:48, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
- That makes sense. I'd support that merge. Ry's the Guy (talk|contribs) 16:09, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks - I dropped a note at TAFI talk so hopefully we can get more input. —МандичкаYO 😜 16:12, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
- @Rich Farmbrough, Northamerica1000, and Collect: thanks for contributing, can you please weigh in here? Rystheguy and I are in favor of renaming this article Historic building (currently a redirect) and expanding the article to include houses and other types of buildings (churches, barns, theatres, etc). I've been looking for sources and I think this would end up being a very rich article with a chance at GA or Featured. I'm going to the university library tomorrow anyway and I'm going to take a look at some books on historic buildings. Thanks! —МандичкаYO 😜 22:33, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
- I don't mind, but it would be such a huge subject that it might end up getting split again. That's fine of course. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 22:49, 28 August 2015 (UTC).
- Well a combined article would not be so dependent on lists, since there are already so many lists. (See above). The historic buildings lists are not further broken down into type of building for the most part, since historic buildings are often converted into different use later: churches become houses or schools; houses become hospitals, office buildings, libraries; apartments, etc. I really feel we need historic building as an encyclopedic entry, while historic house, historic church, historic school are just not different enough. Historic buildings is not a topic that rapidly changes so much that it might later need to be split again. I doubt an article on historic buildings from 25 years ago would be much different than one now. —МандичкаYO 😜 23:12, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

Historic houses in the U.S.
[edit]I'm puzzled as to why there is only a list of French Colonial houses in the U.S. Aren't there some historic houses in the U.S. that are not French Colonial? Also, with a paragraph following the heading "Historic houses in the U.S.", this section does not parallel the arrangement of the other sections. What's the reason for including a paragraph here when there is no explanatory paragraph following the heading in the other sections? Corinne (talk) 13:13, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
- See above - these lists really need to be deleted. —МандичкаYO 😜 13:17, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
- I disagree with the notion that the content needs to be blanket "deleted". How would this improve the encyclopedia? North America1000 01:30, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
- Definitely should not be deleted, just moved elsewhere. Ry's the Guy (talk|contribs) 02:50, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
- @Northamerica1000 and Rystheguy: Please see the comments I pointed to above - we were saying there is really no need to have lists in this article, especially as it's primarily the reason the article is tagged as needing a more global view and why Corinne asked why the U.S. list is so random. Right now short lists make up almost the majority of the article. There's no need to move these lists to other articles because they are already in lists elsewhere, for example, List of historic houses in Massachusetts, List of historic houses in Denmark, List of country houses in the United Kingdom and even List of historic buildings in Klamath Falls, Oregon and Lists of listed buildings in Shetland. It's good to have plenty of linked examples in the article, but links to the lists would be preferable in my opinion. I don't work on lists for the most part, but a master list of lists of historic buildings might be a good idea though. —МандичкаYO 😜 07:13, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
- I don't know. For example, List of country houses in the United Kingdom simply has generic listings of historic houses, whereas this article has actual descriptions. I'd be more into merging the content, which will improve the target articles. North America1000 07:37, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
- @Northamerica1000: actually the country house list wasn't a good example, sorry. There are more than 350 of these (way more detailed) historic building lists in the UK alone, all sorted by county and city and historic grade. There are 25 lists just for the city of Liverpool - Grade II listed buildings in Liverpool-L25 - please see category:Lists of listed buildings in the United Kingdom. I don't have a problem with this content and am not trying to delete it, but as of now, the lists that make up the majority of this article are not adding anything to this encyclopedia because they're already in the encyclopedia elsewhere. The majority of this article is lists of a few houses, with no mention of why they were chosen, just that they are examples. I'm assuming that this article was chosen because it had considerable potential for improvement. Also can you please look to the idea above about doing a merge into historic buildings? I really think this could be turned into a GA or FA. I'm going to get some books today at the univ library. Thank you. —МандичкаYO 😜 10:48, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
- I'm all right with merges. North America1000 10:50, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

Note: I added some totally different houses. This article does appear to have a noticeably different ambit than the list articles, however. Collect (talk) 12:34, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
