Etymology
[edit]The origin of this mountain's "Hess" name is not recorded by the USGS. That being said, there is an officially named Hess Creek north of Fairbanks that was named for Mike Hess, who discovered gold there in 1892.[1][2] Ron Clausen (talk) 21:24, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
Mount Deborah, neighbor to Hess Mountain, was named by James Wickersham for his wife, Deborah. Wickersham, besides being a mountaineer, was an Alaska Democrat who worked with Luther Constantine Hess (1865-1954), a fellow Democrat who served nine sessions in the Alaska Territorial Legislature, Speaker of the House in 1917, and president of the Senate in 1931 and 1935. Luther's wife Harriet was also a prominent figure in Fairbanks, Alaska, she and Luther strongly supported the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines, which became the University of Alaska in 1935.
I submit that Hess Mountain was named by Wickersham after Luther Hess, possibly Luther and Harriet. Any comments or feedback supporting this idea? See links for more information:
