It's maybe a little morbid and over-finnicky of me, but was Dr. Föttinger the victim of shell shards (from an artillery shell - Artilleriegranate) or of hand grenade fragments? The former seems more likely, given the date of his death. It may not be possible to know precisely, of course. Either way, presumably of Russian origin!
