Name of article
[edit]Earlier this month, someone created a stub of an article, Henry Bird (cricketer), about a guy who is known to have played six matches of first-class cricket, all over 180 years ago (between 1819 and 1826). The present article is about Henry Bird the chess player, a grandmaster-strength player (the title didn't exist until 1950) who had a career of over 50 years, including playing in the great London 1851 (the first significant chess tournament) and Hastings 1895 tournaments. Bird played all the greats beginning with Howard Staunton (winning their only known game, as I recall) and Paul Morphy (losing an immortal brilliancy, among other games, in 1858). He won multiple games against almost all the leading players of the time, such as Adolf Anderssen, Wilhelm Steinitz, Emanuel Lasker, etc. The Henry Bird (cricketer) article having been created, someone renamed the present article from simply Henry Bird to Henry Bird (chess player). I am no authority on cricket, heaven knows, but it appears that Henry Bird the chess player was a much more significant figure and certainly had a much longer career than Henry Bird the cricketer, who is known to have played in a walloping six first-class matches. Under normal Wikipedia naming conventions, shouldn't Bird the chess player, as the more prominent Henry Bird, get the Henry Bird article? Krakatoa (talk) 22:07, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- I think so too, but be sure to say "for the cricket player, see..." or link to a disambig page with others with the same name.. Bubba73 (the argument clinic), 22:15, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- Bird's Opening as well. Henry Bird (cricketer) could well of been made in good faith; for one thing this article is rated low by Chess-WikiProject, so a cricket person could be equally unknowning about the chess player as the we are about the cricketer. - Good point about Bird's Opening. There's also Bird's Defence to the Ruy Lopez. Krakatoa (talk) 22:48, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- I thought of Bird's Defence but found it quite insignificant. It didn't have a redirect until I just now created it. SunCreator (talk) 23:05, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
