Date of Death
[edit]Aces High by Alan Clark gives his death as 31 Oct. 1917, not 30. Which is correct? Drutt (talk) 18:49, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Article Massive Edit
[edit]Once again, I've taken the liberty of adding paragraphs to the article. Previously, there was ONE SENTENCE, and I was not happy with it at all. It's been fixed, and my source is the book German Knights of the Air: 1914 - 1918: The Holders of the Orden Pour le Merite. Put that down.

Expansion of Article
[edit]While expanding this article, I removed linkage to individual months (with a single exception); I felt the linkage added nothing to understanding the article, but could serve as a distraction. The exception was a linkage to Bloody April.
Conversely, I did leave linkages to years intact, in case the reader wanted to set this article in the larger context of world events.
I gave a more detailed account of Gontermann's victories. I also researched the matter of his death. It is still doubtful, with some sources saying he died the day after the accident and some saying several hours after the crash. The two are not mutually exclusive, but I found nothing definitive.

MILHIST assessment
[edit]Hello. I've assessed the article per the request made here. There are a few problems with the article right now. First, the lead is a bit short; remember, it's supposed to be a standalone summary of the article, like an abstract in a journal. Second, there are a few areas that still need citations. The biggest problem that I see is the reliability of the some of the sources in the article presently. What makes the three websites reliable? I checked them briefly for a bibliography list (which would demonstrate their reliability), but could not find any. The last issue is fairly minor: the two images have problematic licenses: the photo of Gontermann doesn't have a source demonstrating its provenance, and the photo of the plane doesn't give an author (nor his time of death), so the 70 years +life of the author isn't valid. I would suggest that both be removed from the article until more evidence can be found. I hope this helps you in your efforts to improve the article. Keep up the good work! All facts in this article are now tied to sources, to the point of repetitive and duplicatory citations. Images were dubbed by someone else.
The "aerodrome" website is run by the same people who are the main publishers of World War I aviation history, Osprey Publishing. In the past, the "Pour le Merite" website crosschecked with other sources giving info about Blue Max awards. "Jasta Boelcke" website has also crosschecked out in the past.

Change of dates/cites for Lecour Grandmaison.
[edit]A check of Heinrich Gontermann's victory list shows he shot down a French SPAD at 1230 hours on 10 May 1917, and another at 1030 hours the following day. I found that a prior editor plumped for the 11 May date for Gontermann's victory over Lecour Grandmaison. Two cites were given—one for the Aerodrome website, and one for Balloon Busting Aces. However, the Aerodrome's page on the French ace http://www.theaerodrome.com/aces/france/lecour.php gives 10 May as the Frenchman's death date. Over the Front agrees. I changed the date to 10 May for the obvious reason.
