Page subject, page title

[edit]

What is this page supposed to be about? Is it about feral cattle in Hawaii? If so, it should presumably be at the title Feral cattle in Hawaii or something similar. Or is it about the extinct "Hawaiian Wild" breed that was reported to DAD-IS in 2007 when the List of breeds documented in the Global Databank for Animal Genetic Resources was published as part of The State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, but is no longer so reported; because in that case the breed name should be capitalised as is our invariable practice here, and the disambiguation suffix "cattle" would not be necessary because there's no other Hawaiian Wild we have a page on. I'd moved it on that assumption, but that move has been reverted. What we most surely can't do is have it at a title that suggests that there are wild cattle in Hawaii: there aren't, any more than there are any wild cattle anywhere else in the world – the last one died in Poland in 1627. • Look at those articles: Feral cattle. The cattle are plural and are not capitalised. Regarding the name, there is "Hawaiian wild cattle" everywhere in use. Nobody uses "Hawaiian Wild". They are not extinct - look at the references - "DLNR Plans Lottery For Special Access Feral Cattle Control In Pu'u 'O'o Area Of Hilo Restricted Watershed | Hunter Education Program" (2013) etc.. No, that's not quite correct – the List of breeds documented in the Global Databank for Animal Genetic Resources does use exactly that name, Hawaiian Wild (that is why I moved it to that title). The full entry, on page 125, reads:
United States of America        Cattle        Hawaiian Wild (eng.)        X
The X stands for extinct. However, that book only reproduces the information sent to the FAO by the USDA Agricultural Research Service, which is notoriously inaccurate (well, mind-numbingly ignorant, really) about the livestock breeds of the USA. This could be an example of that.
But let's get this clear: these are not wild cattle, because there aren't any of those left – so it is rather misleading to have that in the page title. Why didn't you use the title from the section it was copied from? Feral cattle in Hawaii would be a suitable title for the page. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 18:50, 21 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • The name Hawaiian wild cattle is used for ecample here: http://viw1.vetmed.vt.edu/ and https://phinvads.cdc.gov/ (Code: 133426000). Cattle Hawaiian Wild in the outdated version of the List of breeds documented in the Global Databank for Animal Genetic Resources is not clear, because it could be understood equally as shortened version of the Hawaiian Wild Cattle. And that book does not have a monopoly on names. You could change the name to Feral cattle in Hawaii and add information, that the names Hawaiian Wild and Hawaiian wild cattle are used (with references). But the name wild cattle / Hawaiian wild cattle is used very frequently (https://modernfarmer.com/ and many other pages found in Google). Darekk2 (talk) 20:23, 21 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
