[edit]How on earth is this suspected of being a hoax? It is now clearly referenced. PatGallacher (talk) 21:20, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed that going straight to "hoax", rather than "unreferenced" seems heavy-handed. But the reference to "Galsworthy, Adrian The Punic Wars" is presumably to "Goldsworthy" [1] ISBN 030435967X, and gives no page number. There is also a reference at "Moral vision in the Histories of Polybius, by Arthur M. Eckstein", ISBN 0520085205, p.177 which I think justifies removal of that tag. Crucifixion
[edit]It seems that it was the historical general Hannon who was crucified at Tunis. Flaubert conflates this Hannibal with Hannon. "Flaubert's Literary Development ... by Algernon Coleman" [2] Kenilworth Terrace (talk) 16:32, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
I agree that Flaubert conflates Hanno and Hannibal, but I think you've got it the wrong way round. In the novel Hanno is crucified at Tunis (this should be easy to check as it is online) and in a postscript Flaubert says that there was a general crucified by the mercenaries, but his name was Hannibal, but this would have confused his readers.
