Meltzar? Meltzer? Melcar?
[edit]I'm trying to determine what should be the correct spelling for the translated name, I see various sources each spelling it differently, how is something like this decided? — Preceding unsigned comment added by געגאנגען (talk • contribs) 18:30, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
- Oops, sorry I forgot to signגעגאנגען (talk) 19:22, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
- I saw the spelling on the court's website, but I'm not sure if it's the correct one. A lot of sources spell it "Meltzer", or "Meltzar" (see for example: Jewish Post; Globes; Ynet news; and there's more). Others do spell it "Melcar", but I suspect they all copied the court website.
- I'm not a linguist but to me "Meltzar" should be the correct spelling. I'm just wondering how things like these are decided.געגאנגען (talk) 17:42, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- He's not a waiter :-)
- ("meltzar" in Hebrew). In Hebrew the name is pronounced "Meltzer". Israelis with names of European origin often use the old European spelling- and "Meltzer/Melcer" is not a Hebrew name. I am assuming that he (the subject) has seen his page on the court website, and would correct any improper spelling. געגאנגען - it would help if you listed languages on your user page, so that I could have some idea of how much detail I need to go into when discussing Hebrew-English issues.--Sreifa (talk) 11:33, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
- Even if he checked out his name on the website, which he probably did, I'm still not sure if he's qualified to decide how his name should be spelled in English, I'd assume he trusted the clerk who made the mistake in the first place... There's a reason why so many independent sources spell it the way I did at first.

--I think the way a person spells his name is up to him, especially if he's living - which is the case here. But that's just my opinion, the guidelines might differ, I didn't check. The referenced articles all use Meltzer, the phonetic transliteration, and I would assume that a court house clerk would also spell it that way, unless somebody corrected him. Alot of assumptions, I admit. (I answered your next question on your talk page.) --Sreifa (talk) 18:01, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
- I can read/write in Yiddish, Hebrew, and English (and I know what מֶלְצַר means :-) ). Where exactly should I put this information?געגאנגען (talk) 16:56, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
