That's an impressive story -- I'm not a football guy at all and I was drawn in by this! The article is new enough and long enough, and has no issues that would cause a DYK problem. I think the article could make his unfamiliarity with the sport a little clearer, though -- there's currently no explicit mention that he was unfamiliar with it when he was playing other sports, although the WaPo article notes this.
